Vietnam Animal Feed Market Growth

Growing demand for animal-based protein, the rising popularity of meat and dairy products, and favourable government incentives promoting livestock production are some of the crucial market drivers. The growing population in Vietnam is fuelling the demand for animal protein, resulting in an increased consumption of meat, eggs, and dairy products and consequently, this is driving the Vietnam animal feed market demand.

The Vietnam animal feed market dynamics and trends are being influenced by advancements in feed formulation technology, which are increasing the nutritional value and effectiveness of animal feed. This progress is leading to better growth and health outcomes for livestock. Furthermore, incorporating advanced machinery and automation in feed production boosts efficiency and cuts down expenses, thereby increasing the availability of high-quality feed for farmers.

Key Trends and Recent Developments

Increased poultry consumption, rising poultry exports, expansion of production facilities, and advancements in animal feed production technologies are driving the Vietnam animal feed market value.

September 2024

It features five production lines exclusively for shrimp feed, equipped with cutting-edge technology imported from Europe.

February 2024

The northern Vietnamese province of Hai Duong gave in-principle approval to American Feeds Company (AFC) to invest USD 17 million in an animal feed project with an annual capacity of 300,000 tonnes. AFC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Coin Management Holding Limited, will develop the project on a 3.88-hectare area in the provinces of Hai Duong and Hung Yen until September 2045.

June 2023

Japfa Comfeed Vietnam Co., Ltd. (Japfa Vietnam) launched a new animal feed mill and slaughterhouse in Binh Phuoc as a part of the company’s “Feed-Farm-Food” model. The mill is equipped with modern technology, including a cold storage system that preserves essential vitamins and seasonings at a temperature of 20-25°C, ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality animal feed to meet customer standards.

Increased Poultry Consumption is Boosting the Demand of Vietnam Animal Feed Market

Poultry consumption in Vietnam has been steadily rising, driven by growing demand for affordable and protein-rich food among the population. According to the Canadian government, the country’s per capita consumption of fresh and processed was 44.4 kilograms in 2022. This rise in consumption has directly led to higher demand for animal feed, particularly for poultry, creating opportunities for feed producers to expand their offerings and production capacities.

Rising Demand for Aquafeed is Impacting the Vietnam Animal Feed Market Revenue

Vietnam's aquaculture industry, one of the largest in Southeast Asia, has seen significant growth, particularly in the production of fish, shrimp, and other seafood. The country exported fresh and chilled fish fillets worth USD 9 million in 2022. This growing demand for seafood is driving the need for specialised aquafeeds to support the health and growth of aquatic species. As the domestic and export markets for fish and shrimp expand, particularly to regions like China and the EU, aquafeed is expected to become a critical segment of the animal feed industry.

Expansion of Production Facilities is Increasing Supply in the Vietnam Animal Feed Market

As demand for animal products, particularly poultry, continues to rise, many feed manufacturers are investing in expanding their production facilities across Vietnam. This growth is driven by the need to scale up production to meet both domestic consumption and the growing export market. Larger and more sophisticated production plants allow for better economies of scale, lower production costs, and the ability to meet higher quality standards. Additionally, the development of more modern feed mills and integrated production systems enables the sector to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and optimise the use of raw materials in feed formulations.

Advancements in Production Technologies are Encouraging the Vietnam Animal Feed Market Development

The animal feed sector in Vietnam is experiencing rapid advancements in feed production technologies, including automation, precision feeding systems, and the use of alternative ingredients like plant-based proteins and functional additives. These innovations allow to produce higher-quality feed that is more efficient, cost-effective, and nutritionally balanced, which is crucial for meeting the evolving needs of modern poultry farming. Furthermore, technological advances such as the development of feed that enhances animal health, growth rates, and disease resistance are becoming more prevalent. This shift towards smarter, more sustainable feed production is helping producers improve profitability and meet increasing demand while adhering to environmental and regulatory standards

Vietnam Animal Feed Market Analysis

The growth of the Vietnam animal feed industry is being driven by the expansion of industrial farms, which is increasing the demand for high-quality feed to ensure consistent animal growth and efficiency. There is a noticeable shift towards adopting well-balanced, nutrient-rich feed that meets the specific dietary requirements of different animal breeds.

Vietnam Animal Feed Industry Outlook

As per the USDA-FAS, in the 2011/12 marketing year, Vietnam's corn imports were minimal, standing at around 1 million metric tons (MT). Between 2012/2013 and 2014/2015, the import value rose between 2 million MT to 5 million MT. By 2015/16, imports had surged to over 8 million MT. The trend continued to accelerate, with imports reaching around 10 million MT by 2018/19. By 2019/2020, the import value surged to 11 million MT. The most significant increase happened during the 2020/21 marketing year, with imports surging to nearly 13 million MT, which boosted the Vietnam animal feed market volume. Corn, a vital ingredient in animal feed, delivers essential carbohydrates and energy, making up a large portion of the feed blend and supporting livestock growth and productivity.

According to the General Statistics Office, Vietnam's poultry population has experienced significant growth across all regions from 2011 to 2019. The Red River Delta (RRD) emerged as the leading region, with its poultry population increasing from 83.2 million in 2011 to 120.1 million in 2019, averaging 94.2 million over the period and contributing 26% to the national total. The Northern Midlands and Mountainous Areas (NMMA) also saw substantial growth, with the population rising from 65.9 million to 97.9 million, representing 20.5% of the national average. Similarly, the Northern Central and Central Coastal Areas (NC&CC) increased their poultry numbers from 68.7 million to 100.5 million, accounting for 20.8% of the total. The Mekong River Delta (MRD) showed steady growth, moving from 66.4 million to 82.5 million, contributing 18% to the national figure. The Southeast (SE) region experienced the most rapid growth, with its poultry population nearly doubling from 24.1 million to 55.3 million, making up 9.8% of the total. The Central Highlands (CH), though smaller in scale, grew from 14.3 million to 24.8 million, contributing 4.8% to the national average. Overall, Vietnam's poultry population increased from 322.6 million in 2011 to 481.1 million in 2019, averaging 361.7 million birds across the country. The increase in Vietnam's poultry population has significantly driven the growth of Vietnam animal feed industry revenue by escalating the demand for specialised, nutritionally balanced feed to support the expanding poultry industry and intensified farming practices.
