A sperm bank, also known as a cryobank, is a type of fertility preservation, where an enterprise purchases, stores, and sells human semen. The sperm cells are frozen and stored. Samples of semen are collected and checked under a microscope in the laboratory to count sperm cells to find out their health. The person supplying sperm is known as a sperm donor. This process is a third-party reproduction because donated sperm can be injected into a woman's reproductive organs or used to fertilize mature eggs in a lab. A sperm donor is required to meet specific requirements such as age and medical history, among others.
Increasing infertility rates due to lifestyle factors and the rising prevalence of reproductive health disorders are a major growth driver of the global sperm bank market. The growing acceptance of assisted reproductive technologies (ART), especially among single women and LGBTQ+ couples, is anticipated to shape the market landscape. Expansion of international sperm banks and advancements in fertility treatments also boost the market share. Moreover, rising disposable incomes and improved insurance coverage for fertility treatments in several regions are contributing to the market growth.
Rising Infertility Rates to Affect the Market Landscape Significantly
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 1 in 6 people which accounts for 17.5% of the adult population worldwide experience infertility, reflecting the need for advanced and affordable fertility care. This increasing incidence of fertility in males and females is expected to drive market growth. Apart from hereditary disorders, male infertility is also caused due to illicit drug abuse, exposure to toxic substances, frequent alcohol consumption, and smoking. Moreover, the rising prevalence of obesity worldwide is also a key driver for the market. It is one of the primary risk factors for low sperm count in men and infertility among women. Thus, the rising infertility rates are propelling the adoption of infertility services, such as donor insemination and IVF procedures, thereby propelling market growth.
Increased Government Initiatives to Meet Rising Sperm Bank Market Demand
In July 2023, the Victorian government opened a free public egg and sperm bank at the Royal Women's Hospital (Victoria), the first ever in Australia, with the aim of reducing fertility barriers to starting a family. The bank is expected to receive around 400 sperm donations and 40 egg donations annually. The program, a part of a USD 120 million initiative, also includes advancing public fertility services in the region and is poised to expedite market growth. Such government-supported fertility programs are also likely to offer services at lower costs compared to private clinics, thereby, increasing access for a larger consumer base and impacting the market dynamics.

The market is witnessing several trends and developments to improve the current global scenario. Some of the notable trends are as follows:
Key Trends | Impact |
Innovations in Cryopreservation Techniques | The rising advancements in cryopreservation techniques are improving the viability and longevity of stored sperm. There is a growing development of new and improved cryoprotectants that offer enhanced protection to sperm cells during the freezing and thawing processes. Such innovations are resulting in higher success rates for fertility treatments and allow for long-term storage without compromising sperm quality, which is expected to augment the market demand. |
Integration of Artificial Intelligence | One of the major market trends is the increased integration of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and machine learning into sperm quality analysis and donor matching processes. AI tools can quickly and efficiently analyze parameters to assess sperm quality as well as can also assist in predicting the success rates of fertility treatments. This trend is expected to accelerate the process of donor selection and matching and is likely to boost sperm bank market share. |
Advancement in Genetic Screening Technologies | The market benefits from rising advancements in genetic screening technologies that ensure healthier offspring and encourage more people to opt for sperm bank services. Techniques like Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) are increasingly used to screen embryos for genetic disorders before implantation. Moreover, next-generation sequencing is being largely employed to offer detailed genetic analysis and is anticipated to elevate the market value. |
Expanding Applications | Besides being used by couples facing infertility, sperm bank services are also used by people who want to plan their families strategically including LGBTQ+ couples, single individuals, and others who wish to have children later in life. Additionally, the increasing use of stored sperm in various research and development projects is likely to fuel the market growth. |

Based on the region, the market includes North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, as well as the Middle East and Africa. North America accounts for a significant market share of the global sperm bank industry. This high market share is due to the surge in cases of sexual infertility among the citizens of the United States. Moreover, the rising disposable income allows couples with fertility issues to opt for IVF solutions. The growing establishment of infertility care centers, rapidly increasing ancillary sperm banking services such as storage, transportation, and preservation, and the rise in IVF centers are favoring the region’s growth. The prevalence of unhealthy lifestyle patterns consisting of smoking, drinking, and lack of physical exercise is also contributing to the growth of the sperm bank market.
Asia Pacific is anticipated to witness exponential market growth in the forecast period. A significant male population suffering from infertility is one of the major factors boosting the market share in this region. The increasing awareness about artificial reproductive technology (ART) procedures and low-cost treatment options, coupled with rising sperm donors is likely to bolster the demand for sperm banks in the coming years.
