Respiratory gas monitors are medical devices used to measure oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in a patient's respiratory system, which is vital for ventilation and oxygenation in critical care. Healthcare providers employ several types of oxygen and carbon dioxide gas sensors to assess respiration. The gases are monitored in the breath and the blood. Assessing gases in an individual’s breath indicates the efficacy of the lungs to inhale oxygen and exhale CO2. Breath gas analysis is safe and non-evasive and gives an immediate account of respiration efficacy. Breath gas monitoring is, therefore, one of the first procedures to be carried out on a patient in a situation of emergency.
Changes in oxygen levels during breathing are monitored with the help of sensitive oxygen sensors capable of taking a reading every second. To regulate oxygen, ventilator manufacturers employ electrogalvanic oxygen sensors able to measure up to 100% oxygen-enriched air from compressed oxygen tanks. Levels of CO2 released from the lungs are monitored through a device called a capnograph. A capnograph shows CO2 levels in expelled air in real time. Capnography enables indirect monitoring of CO2 levels in the blood. A difference between CO2 levels in expelled air and the blood may indicate lung disease.
Product Launches to Revolutionise Respiratory Care
In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) featured MediPines AGM100, a pulmonary gas exchange analyser as an innovative technology in the 2021 compendium, “WHO Compendium of innovative health technologies for low-resource settings”. The portable MediPines AGM100 was chosen for its ability to instantly detect changes in pulmonary gas exchange in disease states such as COPD, pneumonia, influenza, and ARDS caused by COVID-19.
Research and Development Bolstering Market Growth
Researchers are continuously innovating by developing advanced technologies for respiratory gas monitors, enhancing accuracy and real-time monitoring, bolstering market growth. For instance, in August 2024, a professor of medical engineering, and his colleagues developed a prototype for a smart mask that can be used to monitor a range of medical conditions, including respiratory ailments, such as asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and post-COVID-19 infections. Unlike other smart masks that track physical changes such as temperature, humidity, or breathing rate, the EBCare mask can analyze the chemicals in a person’s breath in real time. For instance, it can monitor nitrite levels, a marker of airway inflammation in asthma patients. The company plans to broaden the technology to include various markers for different health conditions. This platform for collecting and analyzing EBC (exhaled breath condensate) marks a significant breakthrough in the ability to monitor lung health.
Innovative Solutions by Prominent Companies to Meet Rising Respiratory Gas Monitors Market Demand
Several leading companies are looking to provide sophisticated and efficient respiratory gas monitoring systems. For example, solutions offered by Bedfont Scientific include carbon monoxide (CO) monitors such as the Smokerlyzer, which is used for smoking cessation, and the ToxCO, used by emergency services to screen for CO poisoning. Further, the NObreath FeNO monitor by Bedfont Scientific provides an accurate analysis of airway inflammation for asthma regulation, and the Gastrolyzer range helps in gastrointestinal disorder and food intolerance detection.
The market is witnessing several trends and developments to improve the current scenario. Some of the notable trends are as follows:
Rising Prevalence of Respiratory Diseases
The increasing global incidence of chronic respiratory diseases like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia and lung cancer is a major driver of the market. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), respiratory diseases are among the leading causes of death worldwide, contributing to the increasing need for efficient monitoring solutions.
Technological Advancements
The market is significantly driven by continuous innovations like non-invasive and portable respiratory gas monitors, coupled with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and real-time data analytics, transforming the way respiratory conditions are monitored. Devices like Caltech's smart mask , which analyzes exhaled breath for chemical indicators, demonstrate the evolving capabilities in this market.
Rising Adoption of Capnography
Capnography is being adopted in both clinical and emergency settings. It is used for anesthesia monitoring, ventilator care, and resuscitation, further boosting market demand.
Focus on Early Diagnosis and Preventive Healthcare
There is a growing emphasis on early detection and preventive care for respiratory diseases. Devices that can continuously monitor respiratory gas concentrations help in the early identification of potential issues, improving patient outcomes and contributing to market growth.
