The global prostate stents market is likely to be driven by the rising number of cases associated with prostate related ailments and disorders. Some common problems include prostatitis (inflammation, usually caused by bacteria), enlarged prostate (BPH) or benign prostatic hyperplasia, and prostate cancer (a common form of cancer that responds positively to treatment if detected early). BPH is a very common ailment in older men and the leading cause of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The occurrence of BPH increases after the age of 40.
Prostate stent is an alternative for certain patients who are considered unsuitable for transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P). Transurethral resection of the prostate is considered the gold standard for treating severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) or urine retention. Significant co-morbidity renders a few patients unfit for surgery; such patients require alternative treatment. Intraprostatic stents are an example of minimally invasive treatment for LUTS. A prostatic stent is a small device placed to open up the urethra and improve urine flow and emptying of the bladder. Stents are used widely in endoscopic urological processes.
Several companies are engaged in providing effective solutions for prostate related disorders. In 2016, SRS Medical Systems announced that the company secured CE Mark approval in the European Union for its Spanner temporary prostatic stent, devised to be used as an indwelling Foley catheter as well as an intermittent urinary catheter in male patients. According to the company, the Spanner device was composed of a pair of anchors and a silicone tube, and was devised to decrease resistance in the bladder neck and prostatic urethra without stenting the external sphincter. The blind, anaesthesia-free implantation procedure was like that of a Foley catheter.
In 2021, Olympus acquired partner Medi-Tate and its minimally invasive prostate device, iTind. The nitinol iTind device functions like a large stent; it is temporarily placed in the urinary tract using a catheter where it expands to help alleviate symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, like loss of bladder control. The device helps in reshaping the channel to enhance urine flow, and is removed after five to seven days.
Allium Medical has introduced many types of stents for the treatment of various types of urinary tract strictures, on the basis of anatomic location. The stents are all manufactured of nitinol and have a co-polymer coating to prevent encrustations. These stents come in various shapes, are designed particularly to treat individual type of stricture, have a large calibre and a strong radial force, and are self-expandable. The unravelling feature of these Allium-made stents enables ease of removal. Some examples of such stents include the Bulbar Urethral Stent (BUS) for treatment of bulbar urethral strictures; the Triangular Prostatic Stent (TPS) for the treatment of prostate obstruction in individuals not fit or not willing to undergo a surgical procedure; the Round Posterior Stent (RPS) for the treatment of post radical prostatectomy bladder neck contracture; and the Ureteral Stent (URS) (round shaped, available in varying lengths and with an anchor option) for the treatment of ureteral strictures.
