As per the Philippine Statistics Authority, the nation’s self-sufficiency ratio of pork, chicken, tuna, and rice declined to 90% in 2022. As per a United Nations report, nearly 51 million people did not have access to healthy food in the Philippines in 2022. The Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund Program has also enabled over 10,000 rice farmers and nearly 200 cooperative organisations to borrow no-collateral and zero-interest funds for rice cultivation. This has resulted in a substantial increase in hybrid rice yields, from 7MT to 15MT in recent years.

Farmers in the country have achieved a 41% increase in rice yields through the usage of hybrid rice seeds as compared to inbred conventional seeds. In 2022, the SSR for round scad declined to 80% in the Philippines. Nearly 50% of all those people facing severe/moderate food insecurity are present in the Philippines. Hybrid rice seeds have a significant potential to increase the food security of the country and boost its economic growth rate.
