Middle East and Africa Animal Feed Market Growth

The rising population of livestock, growing demand for animal-based protein, and high dependency of the MEA region on feed imports are some of the prominent drivers for the growth of the Middle East and Africa animal feed market. The rise in population and high disposable income in the region has resulted in a higher demand for livestock products, leading to the expansion of the livestock sector and the demand for more animal feed.

Farmers are becoming more conscious of the influence that feed quality has on the well-being of animals and the standard of animal products. This growing awareness is encouraging farmers to actively search for high-end, nutritional feed to ensure the growth of their livestock and poultry.  Moreover, the rise of aquaculture sector in several countries in the region has led to a growing need for high-quality aquaculture feeds.

Customised feed solutions are also becoming increasingly popular as they are being personalised to meet the unique requirements of various species and breeds, aiming to enhance their growth, reproduction, and overall well-being.

Key Trends and Recent Developments

Rising poultry consumption, the growing use of sustainable products, along with strategic public-private partnerships are driving the Middle East and Africa animal feed market value.

September 2024

DSM-Firmenich, a global distributor of animal feed, inaugurated a new animal nutrition and health manufacturing plant in Egypt. The inauguration was done to meet the increasing demand for premixes and feed additives in the region, catering specifically to middle and large livestock farms and feed mills in the Middle East and African countries.

August 2024

De Heus Kenya, a major animal feed brand in Africa, opened two new stores in Kenya in partnership with Royal Dutch Feeds. The stores were fully stocked with De Heus concentrates and were located at Karara Mois Bridge and Thika Town respectively.  The company had been steadily expanding its presence in Africa with operational stores already present in Egypt, Ethiopia, Uganda, South Africa, Ghana, and Ivory Coast.

April 2024

Nutreco, a leading supplier of animal and aquafeed in the Middle East and African region, opened a state-of-the-art fish and poultry feed facility in Nigeria through its operating company Skretting and Trouw Nutrition. The facility, worth EUR 25 million spanned over an area of 17,000 square metres and had a manufacturing capacity of 125,000 metric tonnes annually.

August 2023

Animal nutrition brand Berg and Schmidt established the Berg and Schmidt Middle East Trading LLC as their new subsidiary in Dubai. The move catered to the growing demand for feed additives and offered enhanced services to Gulf Cooperation Council States clients. Specifically, the subsidiary was established to increase the supply of its specialities LipoVital functional lipids, LipoAktivrumen protected glucose and amino acids, BergaFat fat powders, lecithins, trace minerals and emulsifiers within the Middle East region for poultry, ruminants and aquaculture.

Increased Poultry Consumption and Production Propelling the Growth of Middle East and Africa Animal Feed Market

High poultry consumption drives the animal feed market in the region. According to the Food and Agricultural Organisation, the overall meat consumption in Africa is expected to grow by 30% between 2021 and 2030 owing to high population growth. Similarly, in UAE, meat consumption was forecasted to grow to 456,000 metric tonnes due to the rise and recovery of the travel and tourism sector. To meet the growing consumption needs, the FAO further projected a strong rise in beef meat production (15%) and sheep meat production by the end of 2030. The growing consumption as well as production of poultry meat in the region is expected to propel the animal feed market growth in the Middle East and Africa region.

Rising Poultry Exports Raising the Middle East and Africa Animal Feed Market Revenue

The Middle East and Africa region, particularly North Africa, is one of the highest exporters of poultry meat in the world. According to the World Bank, the region accounted for a 1.95% share of the total poultry meat exports globally in 2022, exceeding the absolute value of USD 3 billion. However, this was the second-highest export value, following the poultry exports by the Sub-Saharan African region, which accounted for over 2% of the global share. As the poultry meat exports by the Middle East, Sub-Saharan, and North African regions grow in the coming years, owing to the rise in global trade, the impact of globalisation on food consumption patterns, and the development of a robust shipping infrastructure market, the animal feed industry is expected to witness a surge in its revenue growth.

Use of Sustainable Feed Varieties Enhancing the Long-term Stability of the Animal Feed Industry in Middle East and Africa

Growing concerns over the rising greenhouse gas emissions emerging from the poultry sector are encouraging poultry farmers to shift to sustainably produced animal feed with eco-friendly ingredients. These are not only healthy for animals due to their natural origins but are also cost-effective for farmers and help the government achieve its environmental targets and objectives. As a result, key market players are investing heavily in their development, research and production eyeing future growth. For instance, scientists in Africa published research which highlighted the benefits of using Napier grass, widely grown in the region, as animal fodder or fodder ingredient. They concluded that when combined with silage made from locally grown maize, Napier grass can serve as one of the most nutritional diets for cows and other poultry animals in the region.  Such research efforts open new market opportunities for animal feed consumers and producers alike.

Public Private Partnerships are a Major Trend of Middle East and Africa Animal Feed Market

Public-private partnerships are becoming a major trend in the animal feed market, serving as an effective source of funding or investment for industry leaders. Their investment or grants are enabling a wholesome growth of the sector, from research to production. Several such partnerships have developed in the Middle East and Africa region during the recent part. For instance, the Partnership for Resilient and Inclusive Small Stock Market project in Africa was operational until June 2024 and was executed with a budget of EUR 15.5 million. The project was aimed at reforming the pork, poultry and animal feed value chains by facilitating private sector investment, competitiveness resilience to climate change, and capacity enhancement of farmers across 10 districts in Rwanda. However, the implementation of the project was done by key public institutions such as the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board as well as the National Industrial Research and Development Agency (NIRDA). Such programmes lead to the investment-led growth of the animal feed market.
