Some of the influential drivers for the growth of the Indonesia animal feed market are the increasing demand for animal-based protein in Indonesia, the growth of the dairy sector, and innovations in feed formulations to incorporate vitamins, and minerals, among other nutrients, to meet the specific dietary requirements of animals.
With the rising demand for livestock products, the country's cattle-rearing practices have witnessed a surge. Moreover, there is an increased focus on the expansion of the industrial farms which is boosting the demand for high-end feed products that can aid livestock development.
The increased utilisation of automation and advanced machinery in the animal feed industry in Indonesia can enhance the productivity of feed production as well as its quality, ensuring that the farm animals get the highest quality of feed products, consequently leading to the production of high-value dairy, poultry, and other animal protein products.
Rising poultry production, increasing poultry exports, growing popularity of aquaculture, and expansion of production infrastructure are driving the Indonesia animal feed market value.
December 2023
ADM, a leading global animal feed supplier, signed an agreement to acquire PT Trouw Nutrition Indonesia, Nutreco’s subsidiary, pioneering premix animal feed in the Indonesian animal feed industry. With the acquisition, ADM strengthened its premix and feed additives business across the country. The assets that were acquired included premix production plants at Surabaya and Cibitung in Jakarta and laboratories, warehouses, as well as offices across Indonesia. The premix production plants featured full automation solutions with intelligent process optimisation.
November 2022
DeHues opened its fourth feed production facility in Indonesia, located on an area of 5 hectares in PIER Pasurua, east of Java Island. It had a production capacity of 300,000 metric tonnes and was equipped with European technology, automation, and digital systems. At the opening ceremony of the production site, De Hues also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture encouraging cooperation in the use of corn as animal feed. It ensured working with corn farmers in the country to develop their businesses, besides providing cattle feed assistance to farmers in Bitar and Malang.
February 2021
China-based animal feed producer New Hope Group announced its plan to build a new feed mill in Sumatra, Indonesia with an investment worth USD 100 million. The announcement came soon after officials from the Investment and Promotion Agency of Northern Sumatra visited China seeking investment opportunities for the region. Before this, the company had already built two new feed mills in Surabaya, East Java and Tangerang, Banten spending around USD 155 million.
January 2021
Bioproton and PT Agroveta Husada Dharma hosted an Indonesian product launch webinar to unveil Natupro, a heat-stable animal feed probiotic. The product contained multiple Bacillus species known for maintaining diverse gut microbiota, leading to improved gut health and performance. Moreover, its availability in powder form enabled easy mixing with feed and concentrated water-soluble version, Natupro C. The heat-stable Bacillus spores made Natupro suitable for poultry, swine, ruminant, and aqua diets.
Rising Poultry Consumption Propelling the Growth of Indonesia Animal Feed Market
Poultry products such as chicken meat and eggs are staples for Indonesian locals and serve as a major source of protein in their diets, resulting in a highly developed poultry farming industry which drives the demand for animal feed. According to the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), poultry meat consumption per capita in Indonesia reached 14.2 kg in 2021, a 4.87% from the previous year. As consumption further grows due to rising population and changing food consumption patterns, the animal feed market is expected to witness a sharp surge.
Increasing Poultry Exports Adding to the Indonesia Animal Feed Market Revenue
The increasing exports of poultry products from Indonesia to major export markets such as the United States, China, Japan, Vietnam and Singapore, are adding up to the animal feed market revenue. In 2022, the country exported more than USD 3 billion worth of poultry products to these countries owing to high demand and consumption growth. As the demand further rises, poultry farmers are expected to increase their production levels, which will boost their reliability on high-quality and efficient animal feed. This will create new opportunities for the entire animal feed industry in Indonesia.
Expansion of Animal Feed Production Infrastructure Enhancing the Overall Supply in the Market
To meet the growing demand for animal feed in the national and international markets, key industry players are expanding their production infrastructure extensively. This includes the establishment of new feed mills as well as the expansion of existing mills by increasing their production capacity. Besides, the integration of advanced technologies is also contributing significantly to enhancing the productivity of animal feed mills in Indonesia. Relevant to this trend, De Hues, one of the largest animal feed brands in Indonesia, inaugurated two new production towers to produce poultry feed and fish as well as shrimp feed in December 2021.
Growing Popularity of Aquaculture Is Creating New Animal Feed Market Opportunities in Indonesia
Aquaculture is becoming an important source of income and livelihood for the fishing and poultry farming communities in Indonesia. This is raising the demand for high-quality aquafeed in the country, creating new opportunities for the animal feed market. Besides the Indonesian government, keen to increase its seafood exports to major export markets such as the United States, signed a regulatory framework agreement related to quality assurance of seafood products in July 2024. This has raised the demand for quality aquafeed production, enhancing the overall growth of the animal feed market.
