High speed micro motor is typified by high rotor speed, high stator winding current and iron core flux frequency, high power density and density. In terms of technology and design method, high speed motor is different from ordinary micro motor. Speed of a motor refers to the magnitude of the rotational velocity of the motor shaft. In a motion application, the speed of the motor determines how fast the axis rotates (the number of revolutions completed per unit time). Applications differ in their speed requirement, depending on what is being moved and the coordination with other machine elements. Some popular high-speed motors include electromagnetic synchronous motors; induction motors; PM BLDC motors; direct current motors; Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM); and hysteresis motors.
High speed is commonly used in household air conditioners, refrigerators, aerospace, automobiles, ships and other products. Smaller electronic products including electric toothbrushes, cleansers, beauty instruments, electric toys, massage instruments, etc. also employ high-speed micro motors. Drives with high-speed motors are employed in a broad range of manufacturing industries, including machinery, car manufacturing, model making, dentistry, and military, and in devices that produce electrical energy from biogas or steam.
High-speed induction and hysteresis motors having rotational speeds of 30,000–60,000 rpm have broad application as a gyro-motor for spinning the gyroscope. Additionally, ultra-high-speed electric machines offer the advantage of uniqueness of tasks they perform. For example, the application of motor with a 400,000-rpm rotational speed in the machine tool enhances surface treatment quality. An important application of ultra-high-speed electric machines is high-tech medical equipment. Ultra-high-speed electric machines are employed in blood pumps, dental instruments, surgical operations, etc.
The continuous development of electrification in several industries around the world has led to the advancement of Electric Motor Driven (EMD) solutions in terms of enhanced power and speed, offering new opportunities across multiple applications. Large EMD systems traditionally included Large Load-Commutated Inverter (LCI) drives and synchronous motors. Multiple advances in innovation, like the introduction of large power Voltage-Source Inverter (VSI) drives, have enabled improvements in this configuration. GE's Power Conversion business has brought another layer of innovation with high-speed induction motors up to 100MW. In 2021, GE Power Conversion was awarded an Enterprise Framework Agreement by Shell, making GE Power Conversion Shell’s strategic supplier for high-speed systems, including transformers, converters, and high-speed motors. The agreement covered the supply and services of all high-speed equipment – from 500 to 20,000 kW and from 4,000 to 15,000 rpm – to be fitted within Shell units across the world for the following five years, with an option for a three-year extension.
Companies like Nidec exhibit consolidated experience in high-speed machines systems. In addition to its expertise in high-speed machines, Nidec also has extensive experience in devising machines for direct coupling which removes the requirement for a gear box. The company has also been highly successful in electric motor-drive systems for slurry pumps. The company’s offerings include HS SERIES (voltage: up to 15 kV, top speed: 20.000 r/min); MSHS SERIES (voltage: up to 15 kV, top speed: 8.000 r/min); and HS PM SERIES [rated 650 kW @ 10,000 r/min (peak power: 1 MW @14000 r/min)].
Celeroton offers motors with high rotational speeds; with such speeds, motors deliver high performance at the smallest volume and weight. This is enabled by rotor designs, windings, materials and proprietary design tools specifically optimized for highest rotational speeds. Specific rotor design permits maximum mechanical loads and enables high speeds. The motor is completed with a stator winding (air gap or slotted), which is perfectly adapted to speed and torque requirements, and a corresponding back iron. The proprietary motor design and optimization tool ensures maximum performance despite the high speeds, with efficiencies often even higher than in low-frequency motors. This leads to low heat generation in the rotor and stator.
