Major exporters' contributions to the total grains trade remain relatively stable, starting at 150 million tons in 2022 and slightly fluctuating to 144 million tons projected for 2025. This stability suggests consistent market participation from key grain-exporting countries. Top grain-consuming and producing countries include China, India, the EU, Russia, the USA, and Pakistan. The USDA reports wheat consumption in the 2023 season as 148 million tons in China, 108.6 million tons in India, 108 million tons in the EU, 42.2 million tons in Russia, 30.4 million tons in the USA, and 29.2 million tons in Pakistan demonstrating functional flour market demand.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, wheat ranks third among U.S. field crops in planted acreage, production, and gross farm receipts, behind corn and soybeans. In 2024, U.S. farmers are estimated to produce a total of 1.81 billion bushels of winter, spring, and durum wheat. Despite producing only about 6-7% of the world’s wheat, the United States is a major wheat exporter. While Russia and the European Union are the top world wheat exporters, the United States routinely ranks among the top five global wheat exporters.
