Infection control procedures in hospitals assumed all the more importance with the global spread of COVID-19. However, the need for better infection control methods does not stem exclusively from the COVID-19 outbreak. It is a fact that infectious illnesses lead to significant clinical and economic burden, and enhanced infection control methods and solutions are warranted to manage any such crisis in future.
Infected patients requiring procedures such as biopsy, X-ray, etc. at other locations in the hospital pose a significant logistical challenge due to the fact that additional cleaning is required before and after such patients are treated in these spaces.
Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) - a non-touch disinfection method - employs short-wavelength ultraviolet C (UV-C) light to kill or disable microbes by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting their DNA, rendering them unable to carry out vital cellular functions. A robotic-UVGI system could reduce the time taken to disinfect rooms through a comprehensive disinfectant procedure. Such solutions could significantly improve workflow and machine utilization, and decrease exposure of front-line healthcare workers to infectious pathogens. Disinfectant robots could complement manual cleaning and in future carry out validated, reproducible and documented disinfection processes.
Advanced robots have been developed by companies to sanitize surfaces. Some of those robots are claimed to eliminate 99.99 percent of germs. For example, UVD Robots, a subsidiary of Blue Ocean Robotics, can disinfect patient rooms and operating theatres in hospitals. The robot comprises a mobile base armed with several lidar sensors and an array of powerful short wavelength ultraviolet-C (UVC) lights. The robot may be deployed with the help of a computer. The robot emits 20 joules per square meter per second (at 1-meter distance) of 254-nanometer light to kill harmful microbes and bacteria, offering a 99.99 percent disinfection rate. In May 2020, Frost & Sullivan awarded Blue Ocean Robotics the Best Practice Award for “2020 European Professional Service Robots Product Leadership“ for their virus-killing UVD robots.
Xenex Disinfection Services LLC manufactures full-spectrum UV Germ-Zapping Robots to eliminate harmful bacteria, viruses and spores that may cause healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Xenex’ LightStrike employs a xenon lamp to generate bursts of high intensity, full germicidal spectrum (200-315 nanometers) UVC light more intense than sunlight. Studies suggest reductions of 53 to 100 percent of infections acquired in hospitals.
Shanghai’s TMI Robotics created a robot that moved entirely autonomously; it would set off methodically disinfecting surrounding air and surfaces in a given space, and return itself to a docking station to recharge. The robot integrates three disinfection modes - ultraviolet, ultra-dry vaporized hydrogen peroxide, and air filtration. A combination of these modes may be used according to the space to be disinfected.
Researchers from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore), created a semi-autonomous robot that could disinfect large surfaces quickly. XDBOT, or ‘eXtreme Disinfection roBOT’, could be wirelessly controlled through a laptop or a tablet. This eliminated the need for cleaners to be in contact with surfaces, decreasing the risk of contracting microbes from potentially contaminated areas.
Memphis-based Tru-D SmartUVC (Total Room Ultraviolet Disinfection) robot employs ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UV) to sanitize porous and non-porous exteriors without toxic chemicals. The robot’s automated, remote-controlled mobile disinfection system employs UV light capable of killing up to 99.9 percent of harmful pathogens.
Disinfectant robots have appeared as an effective solution to supplement standard cleaning and disinfection practices to address HAIs and heightened hygiene requirements. Such solutions are expected to boost global disinfectant robot market growth.
