The advancements in aquaculture equipment, the growth of sustainable aquaculture practices, and innovations in fish breeding are some of the key drivers boosting the growth of the Colombia aquaculture market. Some of the prominent innovations include vertical fish farming under which fish species are grown in limited spaces.
Several startups and companies are investing in aquaculture wastewater management for the improvement of the quality of water. For instance, they are implementing a real-time water quality monitoring system to check whether parameters such as pH, dissolved nutrients, and temperature, among others, are optimal for the growth and well-being of fish.
Market players are making efforts to reduce the environmental impact of aquaculture farming and maximise the production of fish. This includes the production and rearing of a high-density fish population in a controlled environment to ensure their well-being.
Increasing government support, rising export of aquaculture products, and adoption of advanced aquaculture technologies are the key trends increasing the Colombia aquaculture market value.
April 2024
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Colombia, released the data on the performance of the country's aquaculture chain highlighting the exceptional production of the Huila province despite adversities. According to the data, Huila produced around 73,985 tons in 2023, with tilapia accounting for the majority share. This placed it at the top of the Colombian aquaculture market with 37.4% of the national production.
December 2023
The Colombian National Technical Working Group (NTWG) submitted the first national interpretation guidelines for Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) version 6 for aquaculture to help aquaculture producers ensure the implementation of quality and safety standards required to obtain the Global GAP certification. The guidelines represent the commitment of all aquaculture stakeholders in the country, namely, government authorities, academic institutions, international cooperation platforms, and private sector players.
October 2021
GenoMar Genetics signed a joint venture agreement with Columbian genetics company, Agroavícola Sanmarino to distribute tilapia fingerlings from an aquaculture facility in Colombia’s Huila province. As part of the agreement, GenoMar agreed to supply the entire parent stock requirement from their breeding operations in Asia and Brazil. Besides, Sanmarino agreed to support the commercialisation and data collection of the tilapia performance.
September 2021
An alliance between the Colombian Federation of Aquaculture Producers (Fedeacua) and ProColombia agreed to grant a quality and sustainability seal to Colombian fishes to strengthen international trade and increase exports. The seal would certify production processes in the fish farming sector that comply with Colombian and international regulations.
Increasing Government Support
The Colombian government is actively supporting the growth of the aquaculture sector through initiatives and incentives aimed at promoting sustainable fish farming practices. This includes financial aid, technical assistance, and regulatory frameworks that encourage both local and international investment in aquaculture.
Rising Export Demand for Aquaculture Products
Colombia’s strategic geographical location and access to key international markets have made it a hub for exporting high-quality aquaculture products, particularly to the U.S. and European markets. The growing demand for Colombian fish and seafood, especially tilapia, is driving production and fostering growth in the industry.
Adoption of Advanced Aquaculture Technologies
Colombian aquaculture is seeing a surge in the use of modern technologies such as recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), automated feeding systems, and water quality monitoring tools. These innovations are improving efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and enhancing the overall yield, making the sector more competitive.
Sustainable Aquaculture Practices
With increasing global attention on environmental sustainability, there is a growing emphasis on adopting eco-friendly practices in Colombia’s aquaculture sector. This includes the use of organic feed, minimizing waste, and reducing the carbon footprint of production processes. These sustainable initiatives are gaining popularity and are helping the sector align with international sustainability standards, thus enhancing its global appeal.
