Overall, other countries have experienced substantial growth, with their combined citrus oil exports increasing from about 0.8 million metric tons in 2014/15 to approximately 1.3 million metric tons in 2023/24. This boost in exports contributes to the rising citrus oil market revenue, where the oil is extracted from the peels of tangerines and mandarins that are valued for their refreshing aroma and wide range of applications.
According to USDA Foreign Agricultural Service data, China has consistently been the leading grapefruit producer, with production levels hitting 5,200 thousand metric tons in both the 2021/22 and projected 2023/24 seasons, up from 4,900 thousand metric tons in 2018/19. Mexico's grapefruit production increased from 453 thousand metric tons in 2022/23 to 500 thousand metric tons in 2023/24, compared to 473 thousand metric tons in 2018/19. South Africa's production reached 400 thousand metric tons in 2023/24, from 420 thousand metric tons in 2022/23, up from 372 thousand metric tons in 2018/19. The United States saw production grow to 316 thousand metric tons in 2023/24, from 297 thousand metric tons in 2022/23. Turkey's production reached 217 thousand metric tons in 2023/24. Israel's grapefruit production rose to 185 thousand metric tons in 2023/24, up from 139 thousand metric tons in 2018/19. The European Union's production rose to 104 thousand metric tons in 2023/24, up from 95 thousand metric tons in 2019/20, contributing to the growth in citrus oil industry revenue as this oil is extracted from grapefruit peels that are widely used in aromatherapy for its uplifting and mood-enhancing effects.
