Global Bone Void Fillers Market Outlook

The global bone void fillers market size attained a value of USD 3.41 billion in 2023 driven by increased launch of advanced products, increase in arthroplasty and trauma surgeries, growing geriatric population, and increase in sports injuries. The market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 6.8% during the forecast period of 2024-2032 to attain a value of USD 6.16 billion by 2032.

The defects may be surgically fashioned osseous defects or osseous defects created from injury to the bone, caused by trauma, infection (including osteomyelitis), disease, or related surgery. Further, growing number of total joint replacements (TJR) and infected TJR warrant revision surgeries. Thus, solutions like biodegradable, easy-to-use “press-fitting” antibiotic-releasing bone void filling (ABVF) putty offering efficient antibiotic release kinetics at the infection site and allowing efficient osseointegration are expected to drive market growth. North America, Europe and Asia Pacific are expected to be key markets.

Global Market Likely to be Driven by Need for Bone Void Fillers to Fill Bony Voids or Gaps of Skeletal System

Bone grafting to augment skeletal healing is a common technique in surgical practice. However, morbidity and restricted availability associated with autografts, and the possibility of disease transmission, immunogenic response, and variable quality associated with allografts, have led to the use of several alternative materials, including calcium sulphate and calcium phosphate materials, and more complex materials containing allograft extracts, bone morphogenetic proteins, and other agents. Calcium sulphate is one of the simplest and most used synthetic bone graft material.

Advanced Solutions by Leading Companies Likely to Boost Market Growth

Leading companies offer advanced solutions that are expected to boost growth of global bone void fillers market. For example, Cerament bone void filler by Bonesupport is an injectable, mouldable and drillable synthetic bone void filler comprising 40% hydroxyapatite, 60% calcium sulphate and the radio-contrast agent iohexol. The unique ratio of hydroxyapatite and calcium sulphate is designed to enable Cerament to resorb at the same rate that bone forms. Calcium sulphate acts as a resorbable carrier for hydroxyapatite, and hydroxyapatite is highly osteoconductive, promoting bone ingrowth. The features of Cerament bone void filler make it appropriate for minimally invasive surgery and open procedures where bone remodelling is required. Features include: remodels into host bone within six to twelve months; injectable and flowable; added radiopacity; isothermic and not affected by room temperature; and easy to mix and use.

OSferion by Arthrex is an osteoconductive bone graft substitute and bone void filler comprising 100% beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP). OSferion’s micro- and macroporous structure enables it to be resorbed and replaced by bone during the healing process. OSferion wedges are meant to be used in combination with the distal femoral and high tibial opening wedge osteotomy plates and screws to foster healing and offer added rigidity to the repair. The chamfered wedge design of the OSferion implants corresponds to the shape of the osteotomy and can be readily trimmed to size with the help of a rongeur.

Cytophil, Inc. offers Orthopedic β-Tricalcium Phosphate Product (β – TCP) synthetic bone void filler granulate meets the requirements of ASTM F1088. Its osteoconductive matrix directly bonds to bone, offering an excellent scaffold for bony infiltration. The granules have multidirectional porous structure similar to cancellous bone which provides a favourable structure for bony infiltration (approximately eighty percent porous). Its high surface microporosity enables wicking of fluids and bony deposition. Interconnected macroposity enables cellular mediation to help in new bone growth. Cellular activity on the highly porous surfaces of the granules allows resorption so that β – TCP is progressively replaced by new bone formation. Use of synthetic β – TCP eliminates the risk of disease transmission related to allografts (human tissue).

PRO-DENSE™ Graft by Wright Biologics is a synthetic biomaterial. It combines calcium sulphate with calcium phosphate; PRO-DENSE™ Graft has a triphasic resorption profile that offers a conducive environment for the direct deposition of bone leading to a slow-resorbing matrix that assists healing across the defect.

Calcigen® S Calcium Sulfate Bone Void Filler by Zimmer Bionet is designed to harden intraoperatively; Calcigen S provides an osteoconductive environment for bone growth. Product type includes biologics and bone grafting.
