Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) is the common name of a family of proteins, recognized first in extracts of demineralized bone that were capable of encouraging bone formation at ectopic sites. Bone morphogenetic proteins are present in small amounts in bone material (nearly 1 microgram/kg dry weight of bone). Bone morphogenetic protein 2 also plays a key role in cardiac morphogenesis and is expressed in multiple tissues including lung, spleen, brain, liver, prostate ovary and small intestine.
