Bio fertilisers are derived from biological waste containing live microorganisms. Like chemical fertilisers that provide direct nutrients to the plant, bio fertilisers help increase overall soil fertility. The microorganisms found in these fertilisers decompose organic matter and break down complex minerals for fast plant absorption. This system enriches the soil with nutrients, which, in effect, encourage healthy plant growth. In addition, biofertilisers do not allow pathogens to develop, which helps prevent crop diseases, thus, driving the growth of the biofertilisers market.
The increasing environmental consciousness is one of the main factors driving the biofertilisers market development. There is a rise in the inclination towards biofertilisers due to increased awareness of adverse environmental consequences, like soil degradation and emissions, caused using chemical fertilizers. In addition, the growing demand for organic fruit and vegetables, due to increasing consumer health consciousness, is also providing a boost to the biofertilisers industry growth.
As per industry reports, in 2023, European Union land use for various agricultural purposes spanned 123.8 million hectares. The largest shares were coarse grains at 17% and non-fertilized grasslands at 18%. Fertilized grasslands and wheat accounted for 15%. Other significant categories included oilseeds and fodder, each at 8%, permanent and perennial crops at 7%, and other crops at 4%. Minor uses included potatoes, sugar beets, and maize for biogas at 1% each, with idled land making up 3% and non-fertilized arable land at 2%. This distribution highlights the diverse agricultural practices and land management strategies, bolstering the biofertilisers market revenue.
As per IFA, in 2022, urea production was stable at around 185 million tonnes, while trade was approximately 50 million tonnes. In 2023, production increased by 3.6%, reaching 190 million tonnes. However, trade saw a decline of 4.3%, dropping to 51 million tonnes. The upward trend in production contrasts with the decrease in trade, indicating potential shifts in domestic consumption or supply chain dynamics within the global urea market as reported by the International Fertilizer Association (IFA).
As per IFA, from FY 2024 to FY 2027, global fertilizer consumption is projected to increase, driven predominantly by South Asia and Latin America. South Asia and Latin America will see growth rates of 5% and 7%, respectively. Africa is expected to experience the highest growth at 17%, while EECA will grow by 13%. Oceania and West Asia will see 7% and 10% growth. Mature markets like North America and East Asia will have modest increases of 3% and 2%, respectively. Global fertilizer use will rise by 5% overall during this period.
As per the biofertiliser market analysis, the United States led with 44.90 million tonnes, followed by France with 34.63 million tonnes. Germany produced 22.59 million tonnes, while the United Kingdom and Brazil harvested 15.54 million and 10.34 million tonnes respectively.

Governments in several countries have taken steps to discourage the use of chemical fertilisers and to encourage sustainable farming practices that support the growth of the biofertilisers industry. For example, as part of the National Sustainable Development Mission (NMSA) and other rural agricultural programs, the government in India is encouraging the use of biofertilisers in the agriculture industry.
The initiative aims to expand all forms of support and financial assistance to farmers, while is also increasing awareness about the use of biopesticides sustainable methods to increase overall crop production further boosting the biofertilisers market demand.
The companies are an agricultural biotechnology firm that specializes in creating microbiological solutions to boost crop productivity. They are focusing on biofertilisers, inoculants, and biopesticides, to promote sustainable farming practices and enhance agricultural yields.
