Biliary stenting describes the insertion of stents (tubes made of plastic or metal) to release obstruction in the biliary tree or to treat biliary leaks. When there is a blockage in the bile duct, fluids like bile (bilirubin) are not able to flow into the duodenum to aid digestion. As a result, bile may build up in the liver and show symptoms like jaundice, abdominal pain and nausea. A biliary stent is inserted to decrease or eliminate blockage. Once placed in the obstructed area, the stent is designed to expand and open the channel so that fluids may continue to flow to the intestine.
