Poseidon brand azimuth thrusters are generally employed for main propulsion; these come in 60kW to 2900kW capacities. Almost all individual thruster systems may be optimized for vessel speed or maximum bollard thrust. Azimuth thrusters come in Z-drive configuration (with direct diesel engine drive), or L-drive configuration (for electric motor or hydraulic motor drive). Azimuth thrusters can take the place of conventional propulsion and rudder steering systems to carry out both propulsion and steering functions. Azimuth thrusters are recommended where advanced manoeuvrability is needed in applications like dynamic positioning, ship escort and ship docking services.

Leading companies today offer a new generation of environmentally friendly, powerful and efficient propulsion solutions so that naval architects, shipyards and fleet operators may get high-quality and robust propulsion systems with features suited to several ship types. For example, in 2021, ZF offered new ZF AT 80 thruster model range at the SMM Digital maritime trade fair to close the performance gap for marine propulsion systems. The model range was available as a 360-degree steerable thruster and as a retractable propulsion system, or as a bow thruster. Thus, a larger number of ship operators, shipyards and naval architects could employ the technology in different applications. The solutions ensured robust and economical ship operations, and offered several possibilities for individual configurations and extensions, such as the ProVID condition monitoring system. Such novel and advanced solutions are expected to contribute to the growth of the global azimuth thrusters market.
In 2015, Rolls-Royce launched a new azimuth thruster powered by permanent magnet (PM) technology after sea trials in which a pair of thrusters showed efficiency savings of seven to thirteen percent, depending on ship speed, and in comparison to azimuth thrusters powered by conventional diesel-electric system. Findings had important implications for future ship sustainability in marine as well as offshore sectors. Companies like Kongsberg also offer permanent magnetic driven azimuth thruster (AZ-PM) solutions. Azimuth PM thrusters are environmentally friendly; other benefits include a compact design, high energy efficiency, low maintenance, and less noise and vibration. Such benefits offered by advancements in technology are expected to stimulate market growth.
