According to the direction in which compression is put on the O-cross ring's section, static seals are classified as either axial or radial seals. The direction in which compression is applied to the seal cross sections forms the basis of distinction between radial and axial seals. In case of radial seals, compression is given to outer and inner diameters of radial seals. On the other hand, when working with axial seals, compression is put on top and bottom of the cross sections of the seal.
Radial seals are usually employed in piston, bore, cap, and plug type applications. Dynamic radial seals and static radial seals are the two types of radial seals. Dynamic radial seals work in settings where mated components move in a relatively reciprocating, rotating, or oscillating motion. Static radial seals function in the absence of relative motion between the mating surfaces to be sealed. Thus, static seals are accepted as more enduring than dynamic seals; these seals can withstand larger gaps, rougher surface finishes, and higher pressures. Types of radial seals include:
Double Chamfer Seals – These are homogeneous radial seals with flat bases and a chamfered profile. While double chamfer seals are usually employed in static and reciprocating dynamic settings, these may also be used in rotational applications under particular circumstances.
D-ring Seals (or D-rings) – These homogeneous radial seals comprise flat bases and a rounded sealing surface, making a cross sectional geometry like a capital “D”. D-ring seals may be used in applications similar to those of double chamfer seals, usually in static and reciprocating applications.
Seals are prone to rolling and twisting during installation in majority of radial seal applications; this may result in seal breakdown (spiral failure) during operation. Both double chamfer seals and D-rings have flat bases that enhance gland stability, enabling the seals to endure spiral failure in radial seal grooves.
Chamfered and rounded machined sealing profiles can help installation by allowing for progressive compression rather than a sudden installation point. For radial seals, an installation chamfer is strongly suggested during the seal design phase to reduce installation force and maintain the seal.
In axial seal applications, pressure is exerted on top as well as bottom of the O- ring's cross section. Axial seals can be used as main or secondary seals in applications where primary seals are exposed to a significant amount of solid or liquid pollutants. Axial seals are commonly utilized in face (flange) type applications; axial seals are also easy to produce as compared to static radial seals. Applications of axial seals include marine engines and drives, agricultural machinery, machine tools, track-laying machines, construction machines, medical engineering, etc.
Radial shaft seals support greater uptime in multiple applications, including heavy industrial applications. Radial shaft seals are employed in oil applications across industries, protecting rotating equipment in harsh environments. Further, radial shaft seals are used in grease applications; these seals divert contamination away from critical bearings.
Axial shaft seals were devised to seal axially against a counterface perpendicular to the shaft or pin. V-Ring seals offer effective and simple solutions for rotating shaft applications, including for uses as a secondary seal in highly-contaminated environments.
Metal faced seals were designed for severe conditions and low speeds that impacted off-road and tracked vehicles, but have proven equally useful in applications exposed to sand, soil, mud, water, etc.
Axial excluder seals can be clamped to a housing, with a sealing lip running on a rotating face and eliminates contaminants
