Radiator hoses form an essential part of all vehicles, and need to be replaced at regular intervals. This essential need is expected to drive the global market for automotive radiator hoses.
A running vehicle engine generates hight amounts of heat. The vehicle’s cooling system regulates this heat and prevents the engine from overheating. The radiator, an important part of the cooling system, stores and cools the engine coolant. The radiator is regulated by a special thermostat constantly monitoring the engine’s temperature. When the engine heats up above a level, the thermostat delivers engine coolant, or antifreeze, from the radiator into the engine. The antifreeze is channelled through the engine’s pipes and ducts to absorb the heat and cool the engine. Thereafter, the antifreeze goes back to the radiator for cooling. Upon cooling the antifreeze is ready to be re-channelled into the engine. In this system, the radiator hoses transport the engine coolant between the radiator and the engine. The engine generally has two radiator hoses - an inlet hose which carries hot engine coolant from the engine to the radiator, and an outlet hose which channels the engine coolant from the radiator to the engine. As radiator hoses are meant to bear significant heat and pressure, very tough rubber is used to manufacture such hoses.
Radiator hoses come in several types, including:
Molded Hoses – These are molded into particular shapes to match the configuration of a vehicle’s engine without the hose kinking or making a contact with a piece of metal or some other engine component. Molded hoses cannot be interchanged with any other hose type. Also, as molded hoses are designed to fit a specific vehicles, these cannot be fit in other vehicles.
Universal Hoses – These generally are straight rubber hoses capable of being used in a few applications, such as lower radiator hoses or heater hoses. Universal hoses may be employed where the hose contacting other engine parts or kinking are not issues.
Branched Molded Hoses – These hoses are branched, and comprise a main hose with a smaller branched hose extending from the main trunk. These hoses are vehicle specific.
Flex Hoses – These are designed for flexibility and to fashion a generic, one-size-fits-all solution. Normally it is not recommended to use these types of hoses.
