The global market for automotive brake calipers is expected to be driven by growing use of disc brake systems in vehicles. North America, Europe and Asia are projected to be key markets.
Brake calipers are an important part of a vehicle's braking system. In a disc-braking system, the vehicle’s wheels are connected to metal discs (or rotors), that spin along with the wheels. Brake calipers press the brake pads against the surface of the brake rotor to slow down or stop the motor vehicle. Each caliper has a set of metal plates with which brake pads are attached. Brake pads attached on the outside of the rotors as well as the inside. When pressure is applied on the brake by stepping, brake fluid from the master cylinder exerts hydraulic pressure on the pistons of the brake caliper, which forces the pads against the rotor. The high-friction brake pad surfaces thus slow and eventually stop the rotor, stopping the vehicle. Most four-wheelers today carry disc brakes, at least for the front wheels. Several vehicles employ disc brakes for the rear wheels also.
Fixed and floating are the two key types of calipers. Fixed calipers do not move, but have pistons on either side of the rotor. These calipers give superior performance, but are expensive as compared to floating calipers. Certain types of high-performance fixed calipers carry two or more sets of pistons (or pots) on each face of the rotor; some others may have a total of six sets. Floating calipers carry one or two pistons only on the inside of the rotor, and move inward and outward in relation to the rotor. The piston drives the whole caliper once the brakes are employed, generating friction from the brake pads on both faces of the rotor.
Brake calipers for motorcycles are smaller and lighter as compared to those used in cars and trucks. Motorcycle brake calipers are generally made of lightweight materials, for example, aluminium. Most motorcylces, especially those that are larger and more powerful, carry disc brakes, particularly on the front wheel.
With an increase in the number of environmentally friendly vehicles (such as electric vehicles) and increasing regulations on internal combustion engines, there is growing emphasis on sustainable and eco-friendly solutions, including braking systems. Leading companies are looking to come up with technologically advanced solutions to meet these changing demands and requirements. For example, in 2020, Brembo introduced two novel technologies to decrease vehicle emissions. The Greentive brake disc was designed to resist corrosion more effectually than the conventional iron units owing to a particular coating around the surface. The company named it high-velocity-oxy-fuel. The Enesys brake caliper by Brembo carried a new spring that thrust the pads more effectively into position against the piston, avoiding undesired friction due to a held back brake pad softly pressing on the disc even after the brakes were released. According to the company, this innovation in brake calipers could potentially reduce CO2 emissions as the powertrain had lower levels of friction to overcome. Further, less friction led to longer life of pads and rotors and decreased particulate emissions. Such innovative solutions are expected to increase adoption and enhance market growth.
The biggest advantage offered by aluminium is less weight, due to which companies are exploring the possibility of lightweight aluminium brake components, particularly for electric vehicles and smaller urban automobiles that do not have heavy braking demands as those of larger vehicles and SUVs. Continental seeks to customize disc brakes to meet the softer demands of electric vehicles. To this end, the company has produced a minimalist brake caliper that removes all extra material to reduce weight to the bare minimum. Thus, the applications of aluminium brake components in lighter and electric vehicles are expected to stimulate the market.
