In simple terms, atelocollagen is a form of collagen that is water-soluble; it is employed in cosmetics and for culturing cells. Collagen is a key connective tissue protein that plays a critical role in animal extracellular matrix. As a result, collagen has a high biocompatibility with animal tissues. Atelocollagen is a form of soluble collagen created by removing the telopeptide moieties from tropocollagen, the collagen molecule that makes up collagen fibrils. Telopeptide moieties are thought to account for the majority of collagen's antigenicity. Thus, atelocollagen is thought to have low immunogenicity, making it a safe biomaterial. It is, in fact, commonly employed in implantable medical and plastic surgery products.
Atelocollagen is also utilised as a drug delivery transporter. A minipellet atelocollagen formulation, for example, has been shown to sustain the release of protein drugs and keep steady blood concentrations for over a week. This drug delivery system has been used to deliver a variety of protein medicines, including interferon-α, interleukin-2, nerve growth factor, and bone morphogenetic protein, among others; interferon-α and interleukin-2 have shown high anticancer activity in animal models when delivered in this fashion.
In the last decade, dissolved atelocollagen has been employed as a drug delivery vehicle for nucleic acid-based medications for gene conversion, inflammatory illness, and tumour therapy, in addition to being used as a solid substrate. Most nucleic acid-based drugs can be delivered using atelocollagen. After local and/or systemic delivery, it can also deliver oligonucleotides to subcutaneous xenografts and metastatic tumours. It has been reported that atelocollagen helps enhance antitumour activities of drugs.
It has been reported that the injectable form of atelocollagen shows promise as a material for stimulation and regeneration of gingival (related to the gums) soft tissue; it allows decreased number of procedures and supports in different surgical scenarios.
Atelocollagen is also used in the cosmetics sector, for example, in premium anti-ageing products. Atelocollagen based luxury products are said to make the skin smooth and radiant. Further, atelocollagen is said to hydrate, firm and strengthen the skin. Other products that use atelocollagen include lip plumper, mascara, lipstick, lip gloss, concealer, facial moisturizer, makeup primer, foot moisturizer, mask, etc. An increase in demand for cosmetics with atelocollagen is expected to stimulate the market.
