In recent years, high-quality vermouths from Argentina have grown in popularity, created by mixologists and wine industry professionals working on individual projects.
The availability of real, locally made wine in a variety of fruity flavours, and the favourable climate for grape growing is contributing to the growth of the Argentina wine industry. Rapid digitalisation and increased sales through e-commerce platforms are expected to have a favourable impact on Argentina's wine business.
Argentina's arid continental environment makes it ideal for grape cultivation. Most wine-producing locations are located high in the Andes mountains, where the altitude of the vines influences their development. In terms of production, red grapes account for more than 50% of the total value. Argentina has a special category known as "Pink" grapes, which account for more than 21% of the total crop which is driving the Argentina wine market revenue growth.
Argentina's success in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and the Nordic countries is based on the foundation laid by the country's iconic grape variety. Consumption in Brazil and other Latin American markets is expanding, and purchasers are becoming more aware of Argentina's wine styles, regions, and grape varieties beyond Malbec.
Argentina's wine industry exhibits a substantial domestic focus and notable international presence. The country exports 30% of its wine production, with the remaining 70% consumed locally. According to the OIV State of the World Vine and Wine Sector 2023, Argentina ranks as the 8th largest global wine consumer, accounting for 3.5% of worldwide consumption. The primary markets for Argentine wine are the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
In terms of vineyard area, Argentina holds the 7th position globally, representing 2.8% of the world’s vineyard surface. This is preceded by Spain, which dominates with 13.1% of the global vineyard area; France, at 11.0%; China, with 10.5%; Italy, holding 10.0%; and Turkey, which covers 5.7% of the world's vineyard area.
The Argentina wine industry production is predominantly red, with red grapes making up 59% of the total output, with Malbec being the leading variety. The provincial distribution of production reveals that Mendoza is the focal point, contributing 71% of national output—approximately 140,000 hectares. San Juan follows with 21%, or 43,500 hectares. Other provinces like La Rioja, Salta, and Catamarca contribute 3%, 2%, and 1%, respectively, while the remaining 1% is distributed among other provinces.
Covering 3,800 kilometres from north to south, Argentina’s vineyards span 214,798 hectares as of 2020, with 197,965 hectares dedicated to high-quality wine production. However, vineyard area has declined by 1.1% in South America, from 218,000 hectares in 2018 to 205,000 hectares in 2023, according to the OIV.
The growth of the Argentina wine market was hit as wine production in Argentina fell sharply to 8.8 million hectolitres in 2023, a 23.0% decrease from 2022. This represents the lowest production volume since 1957, driven by adverse weather conditions such as spring frosts and hailstorms. In 2023, Argentina’s share of global wine production, excluding juices and musts, was 3.7%.
