The global market for hip replacement implants is expected to be driven by increased demand for hip arthroplasty/replacement surgeries, an ageing global population, and a rising number of cases related to ailments and conditions such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and hip problems. People falling in the age group 50-80 are the most common candidates for hip replacements. However, young teenagers suffering from juvenile arthritis and individuals aged over 80 have been reported to have successfully undergone hip replacements. USA and Europe are projected to be major markets.
Hip implants are medical devices that help people with arthritis and other hip disorders or accidents regain mobility and decrease pain. Different hip implant systems carry their own set of design characteristics, including size, form, material, and measurements. The outcome and life of a hip implant are influenced by device design features, surgeon experience and installation technique, as well as individual patient parameters such as age, sex, weight, activity level, and overall health. While hip replacements are generally successful, hip implants may need eventual replacement.
A stem that is put into the femur, a ball that attaches to the top of the femur, and a cup that attaches to a socket in the pelvis are the three main components of an artificial hip. The ball, also known as a femoral head component, is used to replace the femur's head. The acetabular component, often known as the cup, is implanted into the pelvis. While special bone cement is generally employed to hold hip implants in place, some surgeons practice a cementless fixation technique. Devices with a textured surface allowing the bone to grow onto the implant, thereby securing it, do not require cement. A hybrid total hip replacement entails implanting the cup without cement and setting the ball in place with cement. People who have pain interfering with their daily activities are the most likely candidates for hip replacement. People with rheumatoid arthritis, osteonecrosis, or bone tumours may need hip replacements to reduce discomfort, in addition to those with osteoarthritis or hip injuries. Hip replacements are also performed to improve mobility and general quality of life. While hip replacements are generally successful, hip implants may need replacement eventually.
Hip replacement surgeries may entail total hip replacement, partial hip replacement, hip resurfacing, staged hip replacement, or bilateral hip replacement.
Hip implant components are made of polyethylene (plastic), metal, ceramic or a combination of these materials. The various types of implants used in hip replacement surgery include Metal-on-Polyethylene (MoP), Metal-on-Metal (MoM) (no longer available in the United States), Ceramic-on-Polyethylene (CoP), Ceramic-on-Ceramic (CoC), and Ceramic-on-Metal (CoM).
Companies today are using cutting edge technology to provide better patient outcomes. For example, in 2021, Zimmer Biomet announced U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance of the ROSA Hip System for robotically-assisted direct anterior total hip replacement. ROSA Hip is a fluoroscopy-based tool devised for surgeons who employ the direct anterior approach, and allows surgeons to retain complete control over case planning and execution, while providing real-time data and visualization tools.
In 2021, Smith+Nephew announced the expansion of Real Intelligence digital ecosystem and CORI Surgical System with total hip arthroplasty. RI.HIP NAVIGATION (a software release) increases the capabilities of Smith+Nephew’s robotics platform - the CORI Surgical System - to include total hip arthroplasty (THA). The addition of this software to CORI would enable hospitals, outpatient departments, and ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) to carry out robotic-assisted knee surgery and computer-guided (navigated) hip surgery using one platform. Also, Smith+Nephew's OXINIUM Technology was recognized as the best performing bearing with lowest risk of revision in total hip arthroplasty in 2021.
