The global aramid fiber market is likely to be driven by applications across multiple sectors including aerospace, defence, automotive, personal protection equipment, consumer products, mining, fiber optics, life protection, and ropes and cables. Common trade names for aramid fibers include Nomex and Kevlar by Dupont, and Twaron by Teijin. North America, Europe and Asia are expected to be key markets.
In aircraft, aramid fibers enable the production of strong and light landing gear doors. Further, lightweight, galvanic corrosion-resistant, and robust aramid fiber honeycombs allow superior wing-to-body fairings and control surfaces as compared to aluminium core used historically. Bottles carrying pressurized oxygen (or other gases) on aircraft use aramid fiber moulded casings to decrease overall aircraft weight. Manufacturers employ aramid fiber honeycomb structures in engine nacelles for enhanced strength and lighter weight. Several jet engine manufacturers incorporate an additional aramid fiber layer within the engine cowl to hold errant fan blades or large broken parts thrown outward by the engine’s centrifugal force, thereby preventing damage to cabin or wing.
Modern rotor blades employ honeycomb core made of aramid fiber. Thus, helicopters have become more efficient with lighter and more stiff rotor blades made of aramid fiber.
Aramid fiber is capable of enduring extreme forces and temperature fluctuations of space travel. In Mars Pathfinder, Kevlar® fiber fortified the inflatable landing cushions and the ropes securing them. Kevlar® is also used in communications satellites and space shuttle, to help protect against impact from orbital debris.
Aramid fibers help enhance safety, performance and durability of automotive components across a a broad range of vehicles, from passenger cars and light trucks to professional race cars. Several new vehicles carry multiple important parts made of aramid fibers.
With increasing demand and adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), demand for EV batteries that are safe and perform better has also increased. Aramid fibers may play an important role in battery separators to enhance battery performance.
Aramid fibers provide lightweight and effective armour solutions to protect vehicles from ballistic attacks.
Leading firms are engaged in continual R&D to come up with superior products to offer lighter, stronger and longer-lasting solutions to address the needs of the industry. New, enhanced solutions offering better protection from chemical, thermal, electric, and mechanical hazards are expected to stimulate market growth. For example, in 2021, under the “All protection, no waste” banner, Teijin Aramid and Purfi / Concordia Textiles collaborated on an innovative technology to regenerate pre- and post-consumer aramid-based materials employed in protective textiles to fiber level with very high standard. The rejuvenated fibers would be reused by Teijin Aramid and its value chain partners in the manufacture of aramid-based protective textiles.
In 2021, Teijin Aramid BV (Arnhem, Netherlands) helped develop a novel protective motor racing suit to be worn for the first time at the Berlin Formula E ‘E-Prix’. The ultra-light suit exhibited the protective qualities of Teijinconex neo, a high heat-resistant and dyeable meta-aramid fiber, to offer professional racing drivers with superior levels of comfort, protection and safety.
In 2017, DuPont Protection Solutions (DuPont) announced a two-year global agreement for DuPont™ Kevlar® with Nitro Circus, an action sports company dedicated to electrifying cross-platform entertainment. DuPont would work with Nitro Circus athletes, innovators and gear providers across several action sport disciplines throughout the world.
In 2018, Huvis meta-aramid ‘MetaOne’ was selected as Next-Generation World Class Product of Korea. The product was an outstanding flame retardant and resistant material employed to manufacture fire suits, protective suits and industrial filters.
