Zinc tetroxycyanurate is a chemical compound known for its application as a rust-inhibitive primer pigment. It is characterised by its yellow colour and is used in anti-corrosive primer paint systems, particularly effective on non-ferrous metals like aluminium and galvanised iron. This compound enhances the adhesion of subsequent paint layers, making it a valuable component in various industrial coatings. Its use became prominent in the mid-20th century, particularly for applications requiring resistance to corrosion and environmental degradation.
Zinc tetroxycyanurate appears as a yellow pigment with a specific gravity of 3.0 to 3.5 g/cm3 and an oil absorption of 15-35 g per 100 grams. The particle size is typically less than 10 micrometers, enhancing its performance in coatings. It has a low volatile matter content of no more than 1.0% and minimal water solubility, less than 0.5%. The compound contains approximately 68.5% to 72% zinc content as ZnO and about 17% to 19% chromic anhydride (CrO3). Its pH level is generally neutral, around 6.5 to 7.5, contributing to its effectiveness as an anti-corrosive primer, particularly on non-ferrous metals like aluminium.
The production process of zinc tetroxycyanurate involves several key steps. First, the reactants, zinc oxide (ZnO) and cyanuric acid are gathered. These materials are then combined in a suitable mixing vessel, where deionised water is added to create a paste-like consistency. The mixture is subsequently heated to a temperature between 100°C and 180°C, maintaining a pressure of 1 to 10 bar during this phase. The heating allows the reactants to undergo a chemical reaction over a period of 1 to 2 hours, resulting in the formation of zinc tetroxycyanurate. After the reaction is complete, the mixture is cooled to room temperature. The product is then filtered to separate solid zinc tetroxycyanurate from any remaining liquid. Following filtration, the solid is washed with water to remove impurities and then dried in an oven at 120°C until the moisture content is reduced to less than 1%.

Below is the process involved in the production of zinc tetroxycyanurate:
Reaction 1: Zinc Oxide and Cyanuric Acid Reaction
The process begins by reacting zinc oxide (ZnO) with cyanuric acid (C3H3N3O3). In the presence of water, this reaction forms zinc cyanurate intermediates.
3 ZnO + C3H3N3O3 → Zn(C3H3N3O3)3 (Zinc Cyanurate Complex)
Reaction 2: Formation of Zinc Tetroxycyanurate
The zinc cyanurate complex is further treated with additional sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to form zinc tetroxycyanurate. The hydroxide ions help in forming a more stable structure of the tetroxycyanurate compound.
Zn(C3H3N3O3)3 + 4 NaOH → Zn(C3H3N3O3)4 + 4 H2O
Zinc tetroxycyanurate is primarily used as an anti-corrosive pigment in primer systems for non-ferrous metals like aluminum and galvanised iron, enhancing adhesion and protection against environmental degradation. For instance, it is used in synthetic enamels, epoxy primers, and marine coatings, which are crucial for maintaining the integrity of surfaces exposed to harsh conditions. Additionally, zinc tetroxycyanurate serves as a stabiliser in PVC formulations, improving thermal stability and ageing resistance. According to government reports, the increasing demand for eco-friendly alternatives to traditional heavy metal-based pigments is driving the market, as zinc tetroxycyanurate offers a non-toxic solution while maintaining performance standards. Furthermore, its effectiveness in reducing the decomposition temperature of azodicarbonamide (ADC) foaming agents highlights its versatility in rubber and plastic applications.
