Solid carbon dioxide, commonly known as dry ice, is the solid form of carbon dioxide (CO2) that sublimates directly from solid to gas at temperatures below -78.5 °C (-109.3 °F). It is widely used as a cooling agent in various applications, such as preserving frozen foods, creating fog effects in theaters, and shipping perishable items. Dry ice is advantageous because it leaves no residue upon sublimation, making it cleaner than traditional ice. The first observation of dry ice was made by French chemist Charles Thilorier in 1825 when he noted solid CO2 forming upon the rapid evaporation of liquid carbon dioxide. In 1834, he published his findings and by 1925, dry ice was commercialised for refrigeration purposes, leading to its widespread use today.
Solid carbon dioxide is colourless, odourless, and non-flammable. It sublimates directly from solid to gas at temperatures above -78.5 °C (-109.3 °F), making it highly effective for cooling purposes. With a density ranging from approximately 1.55 to 1.7 g/cm3, this density increases as the temperature decreases. Notably, dry ice does not have a liquid state at atmospheric pressure, and its enthalpy of sublimation is 571 kJ/kg. Chemically, when dissolved in water, dry ice forms carbonic acid (H2CO3), which lowers the pH of the solution. While it is non-polar with a dipole moment of zero and moderately reactive, dry ice does not support combustion. Its sublimation process allows it to leave no residue, making it ideal for applications such as food preservation and theatrical effects.
The production process of solid carbon dioxide begins with carbon dioxide sourcing, where carbon dioxide (CO2) is obtained from various industrial processes, such as ammonia production, oil refining, or fermentation. Next, the CO2 gas is pressurised and cooled until it liquefies. Following this, when the pressure is reduced, some of the liquid CO2 vaporises, causing a rapid drop in temperature that leads to the formation of a snow-like solid. This snow-like solid is collected and then compressed into pellets or blocks. Finally, the dry ice is packaged for distribution.

1. Purification and Compression
Carbon dioxide is first extracted from industrial processes like fermentation, natural gas processing, or as a byproduct of chemical reactions. The extracted CO2 is then purified to remove impurities.
Reaction: CO2(g) → Purified CO2(g)
2. Liquefaction of Carbon Dioxide
The purified carbon dioxide gas is compressed and cooled to form liquid carbon dioxide. This happens when the gas is subjected to high pressures (typically around 60 bar) and cooled to around -20°C, causing it to liquefy.
Reaction and Phase Change: CO2(g) → CO2(l)
3. Expansion and Solidification
The liquid carbon dioxide is then rapidly expanded by reducing the pressure, which causes the temperature to drop further. This expansion results in the formation of solid carbon dioxide particles (dry ice) and CO2 gas.
Reaction and Phase Change: CO2(l) → CO2(s) + CO2(g)
4. Pellet Formation
The solid CO2 particles are then compressed into pellets or larger blocks, which are used in various applications requiring dry ice.
The solid carbon dioxide market is driven by various applications across multiple sectors. In the food and beverage industry, dry ice is essential for transporting and preserving frozen foods, with approximately 50,000 cafes and restaurants in the USA using it for food storage and presentation. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in creating carbonation for beverages, which is increasingly popular due to the rising demand for carbonated drinks. The medical field uses dry ice for transporting organs and tissues for transplantation. In 2022 alone, over 30,000 organ transplantations were performed in the U.S., many relying on dry ice for safe transport of vital tissues. Government reports indicate that the global healthcare sector's growth is expected to boost dry ice demand, particularly in surgical procedures where it stabilises body cavities. Furthermore, dry ice is used in theatrical productions, social gatherings, and weddings to create smoke effects, enhancing visual experiences.
