About Shampoo

Shampoo is a viscous liquid used for cleaning hair, derived from the Hindi word "champo," meaning to press or knead. Earlier, shampoos were made from natural ingredients like soapberries and herbs. The first commercial shampoo was developed in the early 19th century by Sake Dean Mahomed in Britain, marking the transition from traditional to modern hair care products. The evolution of shampoo saw the introduction of liquid forms in the early 1900s, with significant advancements in formulation occurring by the 1970s, leading to a diverse range of shampoo available in the market today.

Properties of Shampoo

Shampoo possesses a range of physical and chemical properties that contribute to its effectiveness in cleaning and caring for hair. From a physical standpoint, shampoos are typically viscous liquids, allowing for easy application and thorough coverage of the hair and scalp. The pH level of most shampoos is slightly acidic, usually around 5.5, which helps maintain the health of hair by keeping the cuticles smooth and preventing damage. Additionally, good shampoos are known for their foaming ability, producing a rich lather that makes rinsing easier.

On the chemical side, shampoos contain surfactants, primarily anionic surfactants like sodium lauryl sulfate, which provide the cleansing and foaming action. These surfactants work by dispersing oils and dirt, allowing for effective cleansing of the hair and scalp. Shampoos also possess emulsification properties, enabling them to break down and remove various types of oils and impurities. Furthermore, many shampoos contain conditioning agents, such as polyquaternium, which help improve hair manageability and softness after washing.

Manufacturing Process of Shampoo

The production process of shampoo begins with ingredient preparation, where solids like surfactants and thickeners are pre-dissolved, and oil-based ingredients are emulsified. Next, these ingredients are combined in mixing tanks using controlled agitation. The mixture is then subjected to heating and cooling to stabilise the ingredients before undergoing homogenisation to ensure uniform dispersion of immiscible liquids. Following this, quality control checks are performed to test pH, viscosity, and stability. The shampoo is then transferred to filling machines for bottling, capped, and sealed. Finally, a final quality assurance test is conducting, which includes microbiological testing and batch sampling to confirm product safety and efficacy before distribution.

Making of Shampoo

Below is a detailed description of the process used to produce shampoo:

1. Surfactant Production

Surfactants are the primary cleaning agents in shampoo. One common surfactant used is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which is produced by the reaction of lauryl alcohol with sulfur trioxide, followed by neutralisation with sodium hydroxide. The chemical reactions involved are as follows:

a)    Sulfonation:

C12H25OH (lauryl alcohol) + SO3 (sulfur trioxide) → C12H25OSO3H (lauryl sulfate)

b)    Neutralisation:

C12H25OSO3H (lauryl sulfate) + NaOH (sodium hydroxide) → C12H25OSO3Na (sodium lauryl sulfate) + H2O (water)

In the first reaction, lauryl alcohol reacts with sulfur trioxide to form lauryl sulfate. In the second reaction, lauryl sulfate is neutralised with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a key surfactant in shampoo.

2. Blending of Ingredients

Once the surfactant is produced, it is blended with other ingredients to create the shampoo formulation. Common ingredients include water, conditioning agents such as silicones or quaternary ammonium compounds, thickeners like sodium chloride (NaCl), preservatives such as parabens, and fragrances. The ingredients are mixed in large blending tanks to ensure a homogeneous product.

3. Adjustment of pH

The pH of the shampoo is adjusted to a level that is safe and effective for hair and scalp, typically between 5 and 7. This is done by adding citric acid (C6H8O7) or sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as needed. The chemical reactions involved are:

If the pH needs to be lowered:

C6H8O7 (citric acid) → H+ (acid) + C6H7O7- (citrate)

If the pH needs to be raised:

NaOH (sodium hydroxide) → Na+ (sodium) + OH- (hydroxide)

4. Quality Control

The shampoo undergoes various quality control tests to ensure it meets the required standards. These tests include checking the viscosity, pH, and microbial content. Any necessary adjustments are made before the product is approved for packaging.

5. Packaging

The finished shampoo is then filled into bottles or containers, labeled, and packaged for distribution. The packaging process ensures that the shampoo remains stable and effective until it reaches the consumer.

Applications and Drivers of Shampoo

The market is propelled by growing awareness of personal grooming and hygiene, leading consumers to seek high-quality shampoos that cater to specific hair types and concerns, such as Medimix's Total Care Shampoo enriched with natural ingredients. Additionally, advancements in technology, such as AI-driven personalised formulas and eco-friendly packaging, are shaping the market landscape, reflecting a trend towards sustainability in hair care products. Moreover, the availability of shampoos with special formulations targeting dandruff, hair fall, alopecia, and colour-treated hair is driving market’s growth.
