About Rock Wool Insulation

Rock wool insulation is made from molten volcanic rock that is spun into fibers and bound with resins. It offers excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties, is fire-resistant, and does not support mould or rot. Rock wool is commonly used to insulate walls, roofs, and floors, providing a vapor-permeable barrier that maintains its insulation value over time. Compared to fiberglass, rock wool is denser, more durable, and easier to install. While slightly more expensive, rock wool's long-term benefits often outweigh the higher initial cost. In March 2024, ROCKWOOL signed an agreement to acquire 250 acres in Walla Walla County, Washington, with plans to build a manufacturing facility for its stone wool insulation products.

Properties of Rock Wool Insulation

Rockwool has excellent thermal insulation properties, with an R-value of 3.0-3.3 per inch, higher than fiberglass. It is highly fire-resistant and non-combustible, with a melting point of 2150°F (1177°C). Rockwool is also an effective sound absorber, offering an NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) of 0.85-0.90. Physically, it is a dense, fibrous material with a density of 2.8-3.2 lb/ft cube (45-51 kg/m cube) that is resistant to moisture, fungus, and pests. Rockwool does not shrink, sag, or settle over time, maintaining its insulating performance throughout its lifetime, which can last for over 50 years.

Manufacturing Process of Rock Wool Insulation

The manufacturing process of rock wool insulation involves several key steps. First, the raw materials, such as basalt, dolomite, and recycled mineral wool, are transported to the site, stored, and then fed into the furnace. Coal, natural gas, and oxygen are also added as part of the process. The raw materials are then heated in a furnace to temperatures exceeding 2700°F, melting them into a molten, lava-like substance. Next, the molten material is spun into thin fibers using a spinning machine with thousands of small holes. Air and water are used to cool and collect the fibers. The fibers are then collected on a rotating drum and layered into the desired thickness, forming either single or dual density wool. The wool is then conveyed through a curing oven where the binder is cured by hot air. After curing, the wool is cut to size and marked with the product branding as required. Finally, the finished products are packaged, palletised, and transported to storage or directly to customers.

Applications and Drivers of Rock Wool Insulation

The growing demand for energy-efficient building materials is a major driver of the rock wool insulation market. Rock wool insulation has excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties, which help reduce heating and cooling costs in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. This is especially important as governments implement stricter regulations to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings.

Another key application is in the construction industry, particularly in emerging economies where infrastructure development is rapidly expanding. Rock wool insulation is widely used in the construction of commercial buildings, residential complexes, and industrial facilities to improve their thermal and fire performance. The product is also finding use in fire protection, horticulture, and automotive soundproofing applications. Advancements in manufacturing technology are enabling the development of higher-quality and more specialised rock wool products to meet these diverse market needs. In January 2024, ROCKWOOL introduced ProRox PS 965 with CR-Tech technology, the industry's first stone wool insulation with a built-in corrosion inhibitor.
