The compound has a melting point of 300°C and decomposes upon strong heating, releasing phosphine gas (PH3) at temperatures above 200°C. Its aqueous solution typically has a pH of around 6 to 7, indicating it is neutral to slightly alkaline. Potassium hypophosphite is slightly soluble in anhydrous ethanol (about 2 g per 100 mL) and ammonia, but it is insoluble in ether.
