About Polyvinyl Acetate

Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) is a synthetic polymer, and is also known as wood glue, Elmer’s glue, and PVA glue. Discovered in Germany in 1912, It is usually prepared by the polymerisation of vinyl acetate monomers. Its common applications include being used as an adhesive for porous materials, such as wood, cloth, and paper. PVA glue is also used in water-based paints and as a primer for drywall. It has a glass transition temperature ranging from 30-45°C, which is why it is a thermoplastic. It can be partially hydrolysed to polyvinyl alcohol as well.

Properties of Polyvinyl Acetate

PVAc is an amorphous, thermoplastic polymer with several properties. It has a molecular weight ranging from 100-5000 units and glass transition temperature (Tg) between 30 and 45°C. It is odourless, tasteless, and resistant to biodegradation. It typically has a solubility of around 10-20% by weight and can be dissolved in water. PVAc exhibits pseudo-plastic, non-Newtonian fluid behaviour, meaning its viscosity changes with the rate of shear. Additionally, PVAc's ester groups are susceptible to base hydrolysis, which can convert it to polyvinyl alcohol and acetic acid. This chemical property makes PVAc a versatile material used in various applications, including wood glue, paper adhesive, primer, and in paints, coatings, and chewing gum.

Manufacturing Process of Polyvinyl Acetate

The manufacturing process of polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) begins with the production of the vinyl acetate monomer, which can be achieved through acetylene route and the ethylene route. In the acetylene route, acetylene reacts with acetic acid in the presence of a zinc acetate catalyst to produce vinyl acetate. Alternatively, in the ethylene route, ethylene reacts with acetic acid and oxygen in the presence of a palladium-gold or palladium-platinum catalyst to produce the monomer.

The vinyl acetate monomer is then polymerised in a solution, typically in methanol, using a catalyst to form polyvinyl acetate. To produce polyvinyl alcohol, the purified polyvinyl acetate is mixed with methanol and a sodium hydroxide solution. This mixture is continuously fed into a saponification zone maintained at 40°C, where the polyvinyl acetate is hydrolysed to produce polyvinyl alcohol. The resulting polyvinyl alcohol is 99.5% saponified with only 0.05 parts of free NaOH per part of polymer. Finally, the polyvinyl alcohol is further processed and purified as needed for the desired application, such as fiber formation.

Synthesis of Polyvinyl Acetate (PVAc)

The industrial production of polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) involves the following steps:

1. Preparation of Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM)

Ethylene is reacted with acetic acid in the presence of a palladium catalyst to produce vinyl acetate monomer (VAM).

Chemical Equation: C2H4 + CH3COOH + 1/2O2 → CH3COOCHCH2 + H2O

2. Polymerisation of Vinyl Acetate

Vinyl acetate monomer is polymerised through emulsion polymerisation. The process involves the polymerisation of VAM in an aqueous medium using free-radical initiators.

Chemical Equation: n(CH3COOCHCH2) → (CH2CH(OCOCH3))n

Applications and Drivers of Polyvinyl Acetate

One of the primary applications of PVAc is as a wood glue, where it is known as "white glue" or "carpenter's glue". PVAc makes an effective adhesive for woodworking and bookbinding activities.  PVAc is also used as a paper adhesive in packaging conversion, as well as a primer for drywall and other substrates. It also has applications in the textile, paper, and food industries, where it is used as a fabric finish, a coating for Gouda cheese, and as a gum base in chewing gum.  Moreover, it is now being used as a water-soluble support material for 3D printing. The key driver of market’s growth is PVAc's widespread use across different industries.
