About Naphtha

Naphtha is a flammable liquid hydrocarbon mixture that is commonly a fraction of crude oil but can also be derived from natural-gas condensates, petroleum distillates, and the fractional distillation of coal tar and peat. It is known by various names in different regions, such as Shellite in Australia. Naphtha is classified into light and heavy types based on boiling points and carbon atom content. It is used in various industries as a solvent, diluent, and raw material for gasoline conversion.

Properties of Naphtha

Naphtha’s high volatility makes it ideal as a solvent, lacquer diluent, and fuel component. Additionally, naphtha exhibits excellent solvent properties, effectively dissolving rubber, varnish, and dyes. The purity of high-quality naphtha, characterised by its colourless appearance and low odour level, is advantageous for specific applications. Furthermore, naphtha's rich hydrogen content, high heating value, and favourable C/H ratio make it a preferred feedstock for processes reliant on hydrogen, such as hydrocracking and sulphur removal.

Manufacturing Process of Naphtha:

The manufacturing process of naphtha begins with hydrotreating, where the naphtha feed is mixed with hydrogen gas and heated to 340°C. This step is crucial for removing impurities and improving the quality of the naphtha. The preheated mixture is then fed to a reactor with two catalyst beds where de-sulphurisation and nitrogen reactions take place at a constant temperature of 315°C and a pressure of 370 psig (pound per square inch gauge). The cooled stream is then sent to a pressurised flash separator to separate hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, excess hydrogen gas, and light hydrocarbons from naphtha. Volatile materials (light hydrocarbons) are lastly removed from naphtha under high temperature to stabilise the naphtha. The resulting stabilised hydrotreated naphtha is cooled and sent out of the unit as the final product.

Applications and Drivers of Naphtha

Naphtha serves as a vital feedstock in the petrochemical sector, facilitating the production of key compounds like ethylene and propylene for plastics and synthetic materials. In the chemical industry, naphtha is a fundamental raw material for synthesising adhesives, solvents, and fertilisers. Its role extends to the energy sector, where it is utilised as a fuel in power generation and as a precursor for gasoline production. With applications in pharmaceuticals, polymer manufacturing, textiles, and solvents, naphtha's demand is driven by the increasing need for petrochemical products and transportation fuels. The use of naphtha as a solvent in various industries, including paints, coatings, and cleaning products, has also contributed to its growing demand.
