Methylamine is a colourless gas, which is derived from ammonia, where one hydrogen atom is usually replaced by a methyl group. It was first manufactured in 1849 by Wurtz, however the industrial synthesis took place in 1884. Methylamine was commercialised around 1920 for tanning of leather. It is a versatile organic compound with a formula CH3NH2 and is used in the production of pesticides and pharmaceuticals. Methylamine is also an important precursor in the synthesis of methamphetamine, a highly addictive and illegal drug.
Methylamine is a colourless gas with a strong, fishy or ammonia-like odour. It is the simplest primary amine, with the chemical formula CH3NH2. Methylamine has a melting point of -93.10°C (-135.58°F) and a boiling point of -6.3°C (20.7°F) at 760 mmHg. Its density is 0.6562 g/cm cube at 25°C, and it is soluble in water, alcohol, and ether. Methylamine is a flammable gas at normal temperature and pressure and is a stronger base than ammonia, with a pKb of 3.35 at 25°C. Moreover, it is soluble in organic solvents, such as ethanol, ethylene glycol, methanol, and dimethylformamide.
The production of methylamines involves a multi-step process that begins with the reaction of methanol and ammonia over an acidic molecular sieve catalyst. This reaction occurs at elevated temperature and pressure, resulting in a mixture of methylamine products. The reaction mixture is then separated into individual methylamine components, such as monomethylamine, dimethylamine, and trimethylamine, through distillation. The separated products are further purified to achieve a purity of at least 98.5% through additional distillation. The final step involves packaging the purified methylamine products, often in 200-kg drums, for distribution and sale.

Below is the detailed process of manufacturing methylamine:
1. Raw Material
The primary raw materials for methylamine production are ammonia (NH3) and methanol (CH3OH).
2. Reaction with Ammonia
Methylamine is synthesised through the reaction of methanol with ammonia. This reaction is carried out in the presence of an alumina or silica catalyst at high temperature and pressure. The general reaction is as follows: CH3OH + NH3 → CH3NH2 + H2O
Methanol and ammonia react to form methylamine and water.
3. By-products
In addition to methylamine, dimethylamine (CH3)2NH and trimethylamine (CH3)3N can also be formed. The reactions are:
CH3OH + 2 NH3 → (CH3)2NH + 2 H2O
CH3OH + 3 NH3 → (CH3)3N + 3 H2O
4. Separation of Products
The reaction mixture contains methylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine, and water. These are separated by fractional distillation. Methylamine, being the lightest, is distilled off first.
Methylamine plays a crucial role in the synthesis of herbicides, which aligns with the agricultural industry's objectives of optimising crop production and ensuring food security. Di-methylamine's role in producing herbicides like glyphosate is important in maintaining the high yield of food crops.
Methylamines are also incorporated into fuel additives to improve fuel characteristics, engine efficiency, and environmental compliance in the automotive and aviation industries. These methylamine-based additives often act as combustion enhancers, leading to more efficient burning of fuel. In coolants for high-speed engines, methylamines are used to prevent corrosion and maintain the thermal stability of the engine.
The usage of di-methylamine (DMA) in the formation of agents (coagulants or flocculants) plays a crucial role in driving methylamine demand, as these agents help in the removal of suspended particles and impurities from water. Thus, DMA is a building block in the synthesis of water treatment agents designed to improve the efficiency of filtration and sedimentation stages.
