About Hexane

Hexane is a volatile and highly flammable hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C6H14. It is a straight-chain alkane that is widely used as a cheap, safer, and easily evaporated non-polar solvent. Hexane is a by-product of crude oil refining and is commonly found in various household and industrial products. It has a slightly gasoline-like odour and is considered moderately toxic, with potential health hazards associated with inhalation and skin exposure. Hexane has several isomers, including 2-methylpentane, 3-methylpentane, 2,2-dimethylbutane, and 2,3-dimethylbutane, which have slightly different physical properties.

Properties of Hexane

Hexane is a colourless, flammable liquid with a gasoline-like odour and a density of 655 kg/m³. Its molecular formula is C6H14, and it has a molecular weight of 86.18 g/mol. Hexane has a boiling point between 68.5 and 69.1°C and a melting point of around -95°C (-139°F). It is insoluble in water but has a solubility of 9.5 g/L. Chemically, hexane undergoes combustion in the presence of oxygen, producing carbon dioxide and water, and can form Bromo hexane (C6H13Br) and hydrogen bromide (HBr) when reacted with bromine. Hexane finds various applications, including extraction of edible oils from crops, as a solvent for inks, varnishes, and glues, as a degreaser and cleaning agent in the printing industry, and as the liquid in low-temperature thermometers.

Manufacturing Process of Hexane

The production of hexane begins with the use of purified crude glycerol as the primary raw material, which is typically obtained as a by-product from biodiesel plants. First the glycerol enters the aqueous phase reforming (APR) stage, where the glycerol is reformed to generate a range of hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds, including hexane. The next stage involves aldol condensation and hydrodeoxygenation. A portion of the APR products undergo aldol condensation, which is then followed by hydrodeoxygenation. This helps to increase the overall yield of hexane, while also producing butane as a by-product. The hexane-rich stream then undergoes a purification process, which is then stored in tanks and later packaged into drums for shipping to customers. This manufacturing process can produce hexane at a competitive industrial scale of 300,000 tons per year.

Synthesis of Hexane

1.    Extraction from Crude Oil

  • Hexane is primarily obtained from the fractional distillation of crude oil.
  • Crude oil is heated, and its vapors are separated based on boiling points in a distillation column.
  • The fraction containing hexane (and other hydrocarbons with similar boiling points) is collected.

2. Catalytic Reforming

  • The naphtha fraction containing hexane is subjected to catalytic reforming to increase the yield of branched and cyclic hydrocarbons.
  • Catalysts such as platinum or rhenium on alumina are used.
  • Chemical Reaction: C6H14 (n-hexane) → Various isomers of C6H14 + H2

3. Isomerisation

  • Normal hexane can be converted to its isomers through the isomerisation process.
  • The n-hexane is mixed with hydrogen and passed over a catalyst at high temperatures.
  • Chemical Reaction: n-Hexane (C6H14) → iso-Hexane (C6H14)

4. Purification

The hexane mixture is purified to separate hexane from other hydrocarbons. This involves additional distillation and sometimes solvent extraction.

Applications and Drivers of Hexane

Hexane is used extensively in the edible oil industry to extract oil from vegetables and seeds such as soybean, mustard seed, cottonseed, rape seed, flax, groundnut, corn germ, safflower seed, and palm. It helps extract the maximum possible quantity of oil while also eliminating undesirable odour. The steady demand for edible oils is a major driver for the hexane market growth. Hexane is also used as an industrial solvent in industries like textiles, footwear, furniture, and printing due to its easy miscibility with ether, alcohol, and chloroform, low water solubility, and lack of colour. In the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, hexane is consumed as a liquid in the production of tablet moulds and low-temperature thermometers.
