Hempcrete is a sustainable building material made from the woody inner fibers of the hemp plant mixed with a lime-based binder and water. It is primarily used for insulation in walls, roofs, and floors as it offers excellent thermal performance and breathability while being lightweight and carbon negative. Although it has low compressive strength, its environmental benefits and versatility make it increasingly popular in modern construction.
Hempcrete is a unique bio composite material that boasts an array of impressive properties. Its low density, ranging from 291 to 336 kg/m cube, makes it significantly lighter than traditional concrete, while its thermal conductivity of approximately 0.087 to 0.101 W/m·K provides excellent insulation. Hempcrete demonstrates a respectable compressive strength between 0.2 and 1.15 MPa, although it is not suitable for load-bearing applications. One of the most notable advantages of hempcrete is its high vapor permeability, which allows for effective moisture regulation and prevents condensation buildup. Additionally, hempcrete exhibits a high fire resistance rating, ensuring safety in the event of a fire hazard.
The production process of hempcrete begin with the harvesting of hemp plants. Once the stalks are harvested, they undergo processing, which includes decortication to separate the woody core (hurd) from the fibres, followed by shredding the hurd into smaller pieces. Next, lime-based binder is prepared by mixing it with water, and then combined with the shredded hemp hurd to create a homogeneous mixture. This mixture is then cast into moulds to form wall panels or blocks, and then it is compacted and cured. Next, the blocks or panels are removed from the moulds, which then creates the finished product.

The production process involves the following steps:
The primary raw materials for Hempcrete production are hemp shiv (the woody core of the hemp plant), a lime-based binder (hydrated lime or natural hydraulic lime), and water. These materials must be prepared and measured accurately to ensure the proper composition of the final Hempcrete.
The prepared hemp shiv is mixed with the lime-based binder and water to form a homogeneous mixture. The chemical reaction that occurs during the mixing process is the hydration of lime:
Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O
In this reaction, calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime) reacts with carbon dioxide from the air to form calcium carbonate (limestone) and water. This process is crucial for the binding properties of Hempcrete.
The mixed Hempcrete is then placed into molds or directly into the construction framework. The material is compacted to remove any air pockets and ensure proper bonding. Curing involves allowing the Hempcrete to dry and harden over time, during which the lime continues to react with carbon dioxide to form calcium carbonate.
Once cured, the Hempcrete blocks or structures are ready for use in construction. Hempcrete provides excellent thermal and acoustic insulation, is lightweight, and has a low environmental impact.
The hempcrete market is experiencing significant growth driven by applications in sustainable construction, where it serves as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional building materials due to its excellent insulating properties and low carbon footprint. Key drivers of this market include increasing environmental consciousness among consumers and builders, government incentives promoting renewable building materials, and the legalisation of industrial hemp, which enhances the availability of hemp-derived products. For example, countries like Germany and China are witnessing a surge in hempcrete usage, supported by favourable policies and a focus on sustainable development, while Japan's emphasis on carbon neutrality is also propelling its adoption in construction practices.
