About Face Seal Blister

A face seal blister is a type of packaging where a plastic blister is heat-sealed to a cardboard backing, effectively enclosing and protecting the product inside. This design is commonly used for consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, and electronics. Face seal blisters are cost-effective and allow for easy display while safeguarding against contamination and damage.

Properties of Face Seal Blister

Face seal blisters consist of a transparent plastic cavity moulded around the product, with a flange that is heat-sealed to a paperboard backing, allowing for 80-90% product visibility. Typically made from 0.2-0.5 mm thick PVC or other polymers, these blisters offer 50-70% resistance to moisture and oxygen, ensuring product integrity. They are designed to be tamper evident, with a 90% success rate in preventing resealing once opened. Additionally, face seal blisters can protect against drops from heights of up to 1 meter and have a hardness rating of 2H on the pencil scale, making them durable against scratches.

Manufacturing Process of Face Seal Blister

The production process of face seal blisters begins with material preparation, where plastic sheets, typically made from PVC, and paperboard backing are selected and prepared. Next, the heating phase occurs, where the plastic sheets are heated to a temperature suitable for thermoforming, usually between 120-150°C. Following this, the thermoforming process shapes the heated plastic into blister cavities using moulds. Once formed, the blisters undergo cooling to retain their shape. After cooling, the product is placed into the formed blister cavities. Next, the flange of the blister is heat-sealed to the paperboard backing to secure the product. Finally, the completed blisters are inspected and packaged into larger cartons for distribution.

Making of Face Seal Blister

The industrial process of making face seal blisters involves the following steps:

Thermoforming

Thermoforming is the first step in the production of face seal blisters. In this process, a plastic sheet is heated to a pliable forming temperature and then formed into the desired shape using a mold. The most used plastics for this process are PVC (polyvinyl chloride, (C2H3Cl)n) and PET (polyethylene terephthalate, (C1H8O4)n).

The chemical formulas for the polymers used are as follows:

1. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): (C2H3Cl)n

2. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET): (C10H8O4)n

Cutting

After the plastic sheet has been thermoformed, the individual blisters are cut from the sheet. This is typically done using a die-cutting process, which ensures that each blister is uniform in size and shape. There are no chemical reactions involved in this step as it is a physical process.

Sealing

The final step in the production of face seal blisters is sealing the formed blisters to a paperboard backing. This is usually done using a heat-sealing process. The plastic blister and the paperboard are pressed together and heated, causing the plastic to bond to the paperboard. An adhesive layer may be applied to the paperboard to enhance the sealing process.

The adhesive used can be a hot melt adhesive, which is typically composed of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA, (C4H6O2)n).

Applications and Drivers of Face Seal Blister

Face seal blisters are commonly used for small, lightweight products like single-dose pills, lozenges, perfumes, games, and toys. Face seal blisters provide a cost-effective way to package products while offering transparency for consumers to view the actual item. The demand for face seal blisters has been rising due to the increasing sales of pharmaceutical and medical products. Additionally, the setting up of new hospitals and health centres worldwide has augmented the demand for medical devices, further driving the growth of the face seal blister market.
