Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) is an organic compound represented by the formula C10H10O4. It is a white solid that melts to form a colourless liquid and serves as a key intermediate in the production of polyesters, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET). DMT is synthesised through methods like direct esterification of terephthalic acid with methanol or via oxidation of p-xylene. This compound is commonly used in the manufacturing of fibers, films, and various plastics. Historically, DMT was first synthesised in the early 20th century and gained commercial significance in the 1940s with the rise of polyester production. Its industrial applications expanded significantly during the 1970s as demand for synthetic fibers increased.
Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) is an organic compound with the formula C10H10O4. It appears as a white solid with a melting point of 141 °C and a boiling point of approximately 288 °C. DMT has a density of 1.2 g/cm cube and is slightly soluble in water, with a solubility of about 19 mg/L at 25 °C. It is known for its volatility and is used primarily in the production of polyesters, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).
The production of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) can be achieved through two primary methods: direct esterification of terephthalic acid and the Witten process. In the first method, terephthalic acid and methanol are combined and heated to temperatures between 250-300 °C under pressure. This reaction produces dimethyl terephthalate and water, which are then separated. The dimethyl terephthalate is further purified through distillation.
The Witten process, on the other hand, begins with the oxidation of p-xylene using air in the presence of catalysts (Co/Mn) at temperatures ranging from 140-170 °C and pressures of 4-8 bar. This oxidation stage produces p-toluic acid and some terephthalic acid. The esterification stage follows, where the oxidation product is combined with methanol and heated under high pressure (up to 100 bar) to facilitate the formation of a mixture of esters, including dimethyl terephthalate. The crude ester mixture is then distilled, and the lighter esters are recycled back to the oxidation stage. Finally, the dimethyl terephthalate undergoes further purification through crystallisation and distillation.

The production of DMT involves the following steps:
Raw Materials
Step 1: Oxidation of p-Xylene
p-Xylene is oxidised in the presence of air and a catalyst (such as cobalt acetate and manganese acetate) to form terephthalic acid. The reaction is typically carried out in acetic acid as the solvent.
C8H10 + 3O2 → C8H6O4 + 2H2O
p-Xylene + Oxygen → Terephthalic acid + Water
Step 2: Esterification with Methanol
Terephthalic acid is then esterified with methanol to produce dimethyl terephthalate (DMT). This reaction is typically catalysed by an acid catalyst.
C8H6O4 + 2CH3OH → C10H10O4 + 2H2O
Terephthalic acid + Methanol → Dimethyl terephthalate + Water
Step 3: Purification
The crude DMT is purified through crystallisation and distillation processes to obtain pure dimethyl terephthalate.
C10H10O4 (crude) → C10H10O4 (pure)
The dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) market is primarily driven by its applications in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), which are essential compounds for various industries, including packaging, textiles, and consumer electronics. PET, derived from DMT, is widely used for manufacturing plastic bottles, food containers, and synthetic fibers, benefiting from the growing demand for lightweight, durable packaging solutions. For instance, the rising consumption of bottled water and soft drinks significantly fuels the need for PET, which is also projected to drive the DMT market further. Additionally, the technological advancements in production processes are expected to enhance market growth. However, competition from economical alternatives like purified terephthalic acid (PTA) may pose challenges to the DMT market's expansion.
