About Calcium Thiosulfate

Calcium Thiosulfate, also known as liquid gypsum, is a clear solution that is neutral to basic in nature and is free of chlorine. It contains 6% calcium and 10% thiosulfate sulfur, making it a high-quality liquid source of calcium and sulfate. It is also greatly effective in addressing soil deficiencies of calcium and sulphur. Calcium thiosulfate can be easily provided through a fertigation system or sprayer and can further be mixed with other fertilisers to boost soil nutrition.

Properties of Calcium Thiosulfate

Calcium thiosulfate or calcium hyposulfite has a typical appearance of white to yellow crystalline powder with a molecular weight of 152.2 g/mol and a density of 1.870. This compound is soluble in water with a solubility of 100g/100ml but is highly insoluble in ethanol. It is stable at standard conditions but can decompose upon heating with the release of sulphur dioxide.

Manufacturing Process of Calcium Thiosulfate

The process of preparation of calcium thiosulfate involves the usage of lime sulphur (a mixture of calcium polysulfides and thiosulfate). In this process, the oxidation of calcium polysulfide intermediate takes place in a range of reactors to obtain a high concentration of pure liquid calcium thiosulfate which has minimal byproducts. In this process the presence of polythionates is eliminated, allowing the production of calcium thiosulfate. The resultant calcium thiosulfate can be further used in leaching processes of several metals.

Synthesis of Calcium Thiosulfate

Calcium thiosulfate (CaS2O3), inorganic compound commonly used in agriculture, photographic industry, and water treatment can be produced in industries through several methods. Below is the detailed production process of the compound:

Step 1: Formation of Calcium Hydroxide

The first step in the synthesis involves the reaction of calcium oxide (CaO) with water (H2O) to form calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2): CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2

Step 2: Formation of Calcium Sulfite

Calcium hydroxide then reacts with sulfur dioxide (SO2) to form calcium sulfite (CaSO3): Ca(OH)2 + SO2 → CaSO3 + H2O

Step 3: Oxidation to Calcium Thiosulfate

In the final step, calcium sulfite reacts with additional sulfur dioxide and water to produce calcium thiosulfate: 2 CaSO3 + SO2 + H2O → CaS2O3 + CaSO4

The overall process can be summarized as follows: CaO + 2 SO2 + H2O → CaS2O3 + CaSO4

This series of reactions efficiently converts calcium oxide and sulfur dioxide into calcium thiosulfate and calcium sulfate, which can be separated and purified for various industrial applications.

Applications and Drivers of Calcium Thiosulfate

Calcium thiosulfate finds primary application as a sulphur fertiliser in the agricultural sector to address sulphur deficiencies in soils as sulphur is crucial for plant growth. It also helps in the production of chlorophyll and the activation of enzymes. It also acts as a chelating agent, improving the availability and uptake of nutrients like iron and manganese by plants. The global population growth, coupled with changing dietary preferences and urbanisation, puts high pressure on the agricultural sector to produce more food in a sustainable and efficient manner and calcium thiosulfate emerges as a valuable eco-friendly fertiliser which aids this demand.
