Butane is a hydrocarbon which is highly flammable, colourless and odourless in nature and can be easily liquefied. One of the most common uses of butane is as a fuel for cigarette lighters and portable stoves due to its high energy density and ease of ignition. It is also commonly used as a propellant in aerosol products such as hairsprays, deodorants, and spray paints as well as a refrigerant in air conditioning systems.
Butane is colourless and odourless at room temperature and possesses a boiling point ranging from -1°C to 1°C. It does not have a specific melting point but under extremely low temperature conditions it can reach from −140 to −134 °C. The density of butane at standard temperature and pressure is around 2.48 g/L whereas its solubility in water is 61 mg/L at 20°C. Butane is also a highly flammable gas which can easily combust in the presence of blaze and oxygen.
The production process of butane involves a three-step process. In the first step, the gas is extracted from the oil and is mixed with the equipment placed close to the well or gas source. In addition to petroleum or oil, the gas must also be isolated from the water using surface machinery and this is achieved through a dehydration process, which can be done through absorption or adsorption. The last step involves the use of a glycol solution, such as diethylene glycol or tri-ethylene glycol, to absorb water from the moist gas. Once the natural gas has been dehydrated, it is then fractionally distilled to separate out the butane. The extracted butane is then further purified to remove any impurities and finally, it is stored and distributed for use.

Butane, a simple alkane with the chemical formula C4H10, consists of two structural isomers: n-butane (normal butane) and isobutane (isobutane). Here’s how butane is typically produced:
1. Crude Oil Fractional Distillation
Butane is primarily produced by the fractional distillation of crude oil. The process involves heating the crude oil to vaporize its various components, which then condense at different temperatures in a distillation column.
Reaction: Crude oil -> Vapours -> n−C4H10, i−C4H10 (butanes)
2. Catalytic Cracking of Heavy Hydrocarbons
Heavy hydrocarbons from crude oil can be cracked into lighter molecules (like butane) using catalysts under high temperature and pressure.
Reaction: Heavy Hydrocarbons -> Lighter Hydrocarbons (including C4H10)
3. Steam Cracking of Naphtha
Naphtha, a lighter fraction of crude oil, can be converted into alkenes and lighter alkanes, including butane, through steam cracking.
Reaction: CnH2n+2 -> alkenes + alkanes (including C4H10)
These reactions and processes together make up the bulk of butane production. Each method has different yields and byproducts, dependent on the starting materials and conditions.
One of the common applications of butane is as a fuel source as it can be used in portable stoves, lighters, and torches because of its ease of storage and high energy density. In regions lacking access to natural gas, butane can be used as a heating fuel, typically stored in pressurised tanks for use in portable heaters and indoor heating setups. Additionally, one of the driving forces behind the butane market growth is its usage as a refrigerant in ACs and small-scale refrigeration due to its superior cooling efficiency and minimal environmental impact when compared to other refrigerants.
