3-Hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, also known as BON acid, is a hydroxy acid derived from the naphthalene compound with the chemical formula C11H8O3. It has potential use as an intermediate in the synthesis of certain dyes and pigments. BON acid is a yellow to beige-brown fine crystalline powder with a melting point of 218-221°C and a boiling point of 367.7°C. Its density is 1.399 g/cm3, and it has a flash point of 190.4°C.
BON acid, known for its chemical utility, is a key precursor in dye synthesis, contributing vibrant colours to textiles. Its solubility in organic solvents and alkaline solutions enhances its versatility in industrial applications. The compound's green fluorescence under specific conditions is valuable in analytical chemistry for pH sensing. Moreover, its derivatives are significant in manufacturing insecticides and pharmaceuticals, showcasing BON acid's multifaceted benefits in various chemical sectors.
The production process of BON acid (3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid) begins with 2-naphthol as the starting material. The first step involves acidification using concentrated sulfuric acid. This acidification step is crucial for the conversion of 2-naphthol into BON acid. After acidification, the mixture undergoes vacuum crystallization and cooling. This process allows for the precipitation of the first crop of BON acid, which is obtained along with sodium sulphate as a byproduct. To ensure the purity of the BON acid, a purification process is done through recrystallization, where the crude BON acid is dissolved in a suitable solvent and then recrystallized to remove impurities. Finally, the purified BON acid is obtained which meets the required purity standards for its intended applications.

Step 1: Sulfonation of Naphthalene
Reactants: Naphthalene, fuming sulfuric acid (Oleum)
Reaction: Naphthalene is treated with fuming sulfuric acid to introduce a sulfonyl group, producing 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid.
Chemical Equation: C10H8 + H2SO4 → C10H7SO3H
Step 2: Conversion to Naphthol
Reactants: 2-Naphthalenesulfonic acid, sodium hydroxide (NaOH)
Reaction: Alkaline fusion of 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid with NaOH produces 2-naphthol.
Chemical Equation: C10H7SO3H + 2 NaOH → C10H7OH + Na2SO3 + H2O
Step 3: Carboxylation of 2-Naphthol
Reactants: 2-Naphthol, Carbon dioxide (CO2), Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3)
Catalyst: Cuprous chloride (CuCl)
Reaction: The phenolic group in 2-naphthol undergoes an electrophilic attack by CO2 under high temperature and pressure in the presence of catalysts, leading to the formation of 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic or bon acid.
Bon acid is a chemical compound with a variety of applications due to its unique properties. It is widely used in the synthesis of azo dyes and pigments, which are essential in giving colour to textiles, inks, and plastics. These dyes are known for their vivid colours and stability, making them suitable for various industrial applications. In the pharmaceutical industry, bon acid serves as an intermediate in the synthesis of drugs that are made for therapeutic purposes. Additionally, bon acid is utilised in the production of synthetic resins, which are used in coatings, adhesives, moulded items, and insulation materials. The demand for high-quality dyes and pigments for use in various products, from clothing to printing materials, fuels the need for B.O.N. acid. Additionally, the ongoing development of new pharmaceuticals and the requirement for specialised chemical reactions in research and industry contribute to the demand for this versatile compound.
