Acetaldehyde was discovered by Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1774. It was first produced by Justus von Liebig in 1835, who coined the name "aldehyde" from "alcohol dehydrogenated." The term "acetaldehyde" was later adopted in the 1860s. It is a flammable liquid with a pungent odour and acts as an important industrial chemical used in the production of various compounds, such as acetic acid, perfumes, and pharmaceuticals. Acetaldehyde is also a byproduct of alcohol metabolism in the body and is responsible for some of the unpleasant effects associated with hangovers. Exposure to high levels of acetaldehyde can further cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, and may also be carcinogenic.
Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) is a colourless liquid with a pungent, suffocating odour. It has a molecular weight of 44.05 g/mol and a density of 0.784 g/cm cube. Acetaldehyde has a low boiling point of 20.2°C and a melting point of -123.5°C. It is miscible with water, ethanol, benzene, and acetone, and is slightly soluble in chloroform. As a volatile, flammable, and highly reactive organic compound, acetaldehyde serves as a precursor for various chemicals, including acetic acid, pyridine derivatives, and resins.
The production of acetaldehyde begins with an ethanol feed stream that is combined with a recycled ethanol stream, pumped to high pressure, preheated to 626°F, and fed to an isothermal, catalytic packed-bed reactor where the ethanol is dehydrogenated to produce acetaldehyde. Then the reactor effluent is cooled and separated into a vapor stream containing acetaldehyde and hydrogen and a liquid stream containing acetaldehyde, ethanol, and byproducts. Later the vapor stream is contacted with water to absorb the acetaldehyde and ethanol while producing a purified hydrogen stream, and the liquid stream is distilled to purify the acetaldehyde to 99.9% purity. On the other hand, the ethanol-rich bottoms is further distilled to recover and recycle the ethanol back to the reactor feed.

Acetaldehyde, also known as ethanal, is an organic chemical compound with the formula CH3CHO. It is one of the most important aldehydes and is widely used in the production of acetic acid, perfumes, and flavors. The two most common methods of making acetaldehyde are the Wacker process and the oxidation of ethanol. Below are the details of these processes:
1. Wacker Process
The Wacker process is a catalytic chemical reaction that converts ethylene (C2H4) into acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) using palladium chloride (PdCl2) and copper chloride (CuCl2) as catalysts.
The overall chemical reaction is as follows:
C2H4 + PdCl2 + H2O → CH3CHO + Pd + 2HCl
The reaction proceeds in two steps:
1. C2H4 + PdCl2 + H2O → CH3CHO + Pd + 2HCl
2. Pd + 2CuCl2 → PdCl2 + 2CuCl
The regenerated PdCl2 can be used again in the reaction, making this process cyclic.
2. Oxidation of Ethanol
Another common method for producing acetaldehyde is through the oxidation of ethanol (C2H5OH). This can be done using various oxidizing agents such as silver or copper.
The overall chemical reaction using silver as a catalyst is as follows:
C2H5OH + O2 → CH3CHO + H2O
The process involves the following steps:
1. Dehydrogenation of ethanol: C2H5OH → CH3CHO + H2
2. Oxidation of hydrogen: 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O
In the presence of silver catalyst, the overall reaction simplifies to the direct oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde.
Acetaldehyde is a versatile chemical with numerous applications across various industries. It serves as an intermediate in the production of chemicals, plastics, synthetic rubber, perfumes, aniline dyes, and pharmaceuticals. For instance, it is used in the synthesis of pyridines, pentaerythritol, acetic acid, ethyl acetate, and other derivatives. Additionally, acetaldehyde is employed in the food and beverage industry as a synthetic flavouring substance and food preservative. It also finds use in the paper and pulp industry as a solvent and bleaching agent. Furthermore, it is used in the pharmaceutical industry to produce various medications and in the water treatment industry to remove impurities. These diverse applications is propelling the global market for this liquid.
