The Commodity Compass Week 52 2024 - Week 01 2025

As 2024 drew to a close and 2025 began, commodity markets experienced mixed trends. In the food and beverage sector, palm oil prices initially declined due to weak terminal demand but rebounded slightly in the first week of January as market conditions improved. Soybean prices increased on reports of dry weather in key South American regions, while maize prices climbed to near six-month highs driven by strong export demand and tighter supply conditions. Sugar prices remained stable due to abundant supply and uncertain demand, while wheat prices saw a slight uptick on export opportunities. In the metals and minerals category, copper prices continued their declining trend, driven by concerns over weaker demand and global economic uncertainties. Iron ore prices decreased as daily pig iron production declined, while aluminium prices remained weak due to lower-than-expected demand from downstream markets. Nickel prices fell on weak demand and inventory surplus, but tin prices saw a modest rise supported by tightening global inventories and expectations of continued demand in new energy sectors. The chemicals market displayed varied trends, with ethylene prices stabilizing and starting to correct in China, while benzene prices decreased due to reduced demand from key end-user sectors. Propylene prices saw modest upward movement driven by stronger demand from certain downstream sectors. Caustic soda and soda ash prices experienced declines due to ample supply and moderate demand. Precious metals remained relatively stable, with gold seeing a slight increase as a safe-haven asset. Silver prices decreased due to rising US Treasury yields and a stronger dollar. In the energy sector, crude oil prices increased due to Russia halting natural gas exports via Ukraine and colder winter conditions in Europe and North America. Coal prices rose on higher export market prices and demand, while natural gas prices in the US decreased due to milder-than-expected weather forecasts.
