It is produced using the Solvay process, where ammonia and carbon dioxide are passed into a sodium chloride solution. Soda ash is a common cleaning agent for washing clothes and is a key ingredient in dry soap powders. It acts as a silica flux, lowering the melting point of mixtures to form soda glass, which becomes insoluble with added calcium carbonate.
