Polyamide refers to polymers in which repeating units of the molecular chain are held together by amide bonds. Common examples of polyamide include nylon, aramids, and others. Such polymers offer exceptional durability, abrasion and wear resistance, flexibility, high strength, and low density, making them ideal for diverse applications in the textiles, automotive, engineering plastics, and electronics sectors, among others. Polyamides make up an important group of industrially manufactured synthetic polymers, of which nylon remains the most important due to its versatility and is used in some of the most essential fibres and plastics.
The global polyamide market stood at a volume of around 7,687.5 KT in the year 2023. The market is assessed to grow at a CAGR of 4.5% between 2024 and 2032 to reach a volume of about 1,1151.05 KT by 2032. The polyamide market benefits from the flourishing automotive sector, where polyamides are used in the manufacturing of mirrors, airbag components, and wheel covers. The shift towards EVs and HEVs is also surging the applications of polyamides in e-box housings and covers and battery module housings. Furthermore, the rising popularity of additive manufacturing is driving the demand for polyamides as 3D printing materials owing to their cost-effectiveness, excellent dimensional stability, and mechanical, chemical, and thermal resistance. With the growing environmental consciousness, key players are developing sustainable polyamides made from fabric waste and pre-consumer materials such as industrial fishing nets and carpets.
The automotive industry is a major consumer of polyamide with an estimated 29% market share and is anticipated to remain the largest market in the forecast period.
The global capacity of polyamide was about 15,300 KT in 2023. It is estimated to reach 17,800 KT by 2032. The Asia Pacific holds the major share of polyamide capacities, representing more than 50% of the global production capacity. China is the leading PA 66 manufacturer, whereas North America is the leading producer of PA 6. The plant capacity utilization of polyamide stood at 55% in 2023.
Invista is the world's leading producer of polyamide. The company holds approximately 7% of global polyamide capacity. In April 2024, INVISTA announced its aim to explore strategic alternatives for its business of nylon fibres. Other major manufacturers of polyamide are Ascend Performance Materials, BASF SE, Arkema SA, DuPont de Nemours, and Evonik AG.
