India Fish Market Report and Forecast 2025-2034

The India fish market stood at a value of approximately INR 1,881.84 billion in 2024. The market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 10.20% between 2025 and 2034, reaching a value of around INR 4970.48 billion by 2034. As per the analysis by Expert Market Research, the market is expected to be driven by the growing population, increasing consumption of seafood, and rising disposable income.

India's per capita fish consumption grew to 13 kg per capita per annum in 2022-23. This was only 7kg in 2011-12. Over the last five years, about 28% of households have reported an increase in fish consumption, with 56% attributing this to a greater variety of available fish. The increase in the consumption of fish is aided by the rapid increase in disposable income. Additionally, the proportion of monthly household consumption expenditure on fish relative to total food expenditure rose to 16.8% in 2022-23 from 7.6% in 2011-12.

In addition, the rapid population growth is supporting the India fish market growth. According to the World Bank, the Indian population reached 1.42 billion in 2022, which was 1.37 billion in 2018. Further, according to the World Economic Forum, the Indian population is expected to reach 1.52 billion by 2030. This is expected to notably increase the consumption of fish in the country.

In September 2023, In Panaji, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Margao introduced a solar-electric hybrid fish dryer developed by ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Kochi. This technology implemented by the agriculture department under the RKVY-AFTAAR project, ensures hygienic, eco-friendly drying and reduces contamination, labour, and fuel consumption compared to traditional open drying methods.
